I'm in dubio on this to be honest...on the one hand tobacco is one of the most addictive substances being marketed, and it's legal too. Crazy, to think that such a destructive substance is still legal, but it's socially accepted so it's 'normal'.
On the other hand I'd say that it's anyone's own responsibility whether they choose to use it or not. But, the tobacco industry is marketing this substance like crazy: they want you to take on a habit which eventually kills a high percentage of users as a direct result. In short: the tobacco industries adverts are basically saying "I want you to poison yourself, it's deadly but you'll look cool while dying slowly". And their tool is peer pressure. To me that's where free speech becomes debateable...because decisions made under pressure are not well thought-out decisions.
Should a government never be able to influence your choice so deeply, or could there be circumstances where people simply don't seem to be able to make the healthy choice as a result of deeply rooted destructive social conventions, fuelled by corporations that have instrumentalized those to their advantage?

Nicotene is a unique drug, its incredibly addictive and cigarettes not only kill people slowly they add a highly preventable burden to our health care system at large. Those little fucking sticks of death do need to be regulated to some extent, just like prescription medication is regulated, just like alcohol is regulated. Definitely a long time coming. Ask any smoker who has been smoking for 10+ years, and not 1 will tell you they are happy they smoke still and would not quit if only it were not so hard.
I smoke and I think this is a good thing...
I don't want to quit I enjoy smoking and I don't care that I am going to die of lung cancer...I still think this is a good thing.
