You being the exception on the rule...

I just realized it's all pretty simple: everyone has a god-given right to do exactly as they please with their own body, and health by consequence. However, the line has IMO always been draw where someone's habit negatively affects my personal wellbeing. The problem with smoking is that the exhaled smoke is still harmful to me, which means that I should oppose smoking according to my own rules.

In reality, I don't mind people smoking around me in open air since the impact of the smoke is a lot smaller compared to when someone in a room is smoking next to me. I've learned to live with it, but I definitely don't approve of it, and am slowly starting to embrace the ban on smoking in public spaces here.

So by that logic a lot of things could be banned including cars and any factories for polluting the air we breath...I think preventing kids from smoking is fair and right as for me I don't really care...I made my choice and I alone am responsible for my decision

Smoking was just banned in the workplace and in restaurants in the state of North Carolina.

No, as long as your drive your car responsibly you will not harm unless by some misfortune. But when you are smoking inside the room as where I am, your smoke is going to affect me no matter what (unless you've brought you own portable airfilter with you). That's the difference...there's in a closed space there's no escape for me no matter what.

You are indeed responsible for your own decisions, but also for the consequences your decisions have on your environment.

yeah but what consequences does driving a car have on the environment? Do you think more pollution is caused by cars, factories and all other stuff that leaves a carbon print or cigarettes?

Personally I am not so bothered about second hand smoking and don't really see what the big deal is although when in public e.g a restaurant I really don't mind stepping outside...the only thing I hate is clubbing...going out and not being able to smoke while I have a beer is personally very difficult for me...i still have trouble adapting to the fact that you can smoke anywhere in Russia.

What REALLY pisses me of is people who give me shit for smoking outside...and there is no one NO ONE that can convince me that I am doing something wrong. I usually have a very rude way of responding to such people like "Fuck off...go stand somewhere else"
I think the whole thing has been blown over the top a little...as I say inside is fine I really do understand and it even bothers me sometimes but when I am outside a pub or in the park or whatever...those self righteous fucks really piss me off.

Its just a matter of peoples opinions, i really hate the smell of cigarretes, so back when smoking was banned in clubs i dont think i was ever happier.

I consider second hand smoke like farting, hey at least farting is a bodily function, but hey, you wouldnt be happy if someone is farting right next to you, i would very well asume that you would even complain about it, by saying how gross it is, or how bad it smells, even if its outside.

^you sound like the exception to me as well...and you probably can't smell 2nd hand smoke like others can, just like your ability to taste food is not as good as a non-smokers.

Here there are MANY more smokers where I am living than where I moved from and when you live in a society where smoking is more culturally excepted, smokers have a higher level of entitlement to naturally do what they are addicted to do...smoke. That means more cigs on the ground, more cigs being tossed out of cars, more smoke coming into my car from outside the car when I am stopped behind a smoker and my ac is on (think 100% humidity and 105 degree heat).

Also, today's cigs have proven to cause cancer at higher rates because of the filter which causes the smoker to draw deeper from the cig into their lungs, unlike non-filtered cigs...that little fact isn't cool either, lol

It was fun while it lasted...

Steve Martin had a joke in his early stand up comedy days...

"I was sitting in a restaurant, minding my own business when a man at another table says to me, 'Mind if I smoke?', I turn to him and say, 'No, mind if I fart?'"

2nd hand farting?? that's a separate and unusual issue

I will add that if a smoker is trying to quit, 2nd hand smoke certainly does not help.
