Well, just got back from a really good night in Sheffield - the man like was bang on form and is carting around some very nice music on his hard drive.
A few months back, on seeing that tickets were a credit-crunch friendly £8.00, I decided to weigh in. I ended up going with my brother (Andy) who like me has been seeing Sasha since 1995 and Domnal (a now trusty sidekick ). Stayed at the brand new Jury's Inn (opened Jan 2009) for a bargain £16.00 each. We were nearly on a winner already - just needed the notoriously unreliable Mr Coe to turn up on time (which he did).
We got to the venue at midnight to hear 1 hour of another deadful Uk warm up DJ (we seem to be seriously lacking some talent in certain parts of the country) who played the most awful irish piped music dance tune I've heard in years (I kid you not ).
So Sasha could have started with Cowpander and it'd have been very welcome ... but he didn't. Coming on just after 1.00 a.m. (and playing for 3 hours) he started with THE most sublime and beautiful track he's opened with for years (certainly since he started opening up with Stars) ... bloody hell
He then played 40 mins of (what I'd call) Terrace music - beautiful, melodic and summery creating a nice vibe .. culminating with the awesome Baboop : Yes We Can (Luis Junoir remix) ... brilliant so far, and I really hope he plays like this on the amnesia terrace in 3 weeks time.
From there he started to get darker, playing the likes of Stoppage Time (Reshuffle) and was consistently rather good (in fact he didn't spin one dud all night) playing some great tunes (Nhar : Mithral). The final hour was a lot of crowd pleasing - Ladytron destroyed the place before Love Stimulation and Henry Sainz's awesome rework of Lamur. On the 3rd track from the end he simply stopped and played another lush beauty. The final track was his rockin Doves "Jetstream" remix.
All in all a bloody good night, some truly great music and a bargain. Just a pity I didn't get to bump into Tortuga or Zebramofo who were in there somewhere.
BTW apologies to Chunky and Adzey for texting at 2.08 a.m. if you'd had an early one
