It varies. Good luck, my process has been ongoing for about a year now. Just receding. Good friend of mine, the same age, is almost completely bald; just has a ring of hair around his head (the dome is bald) so he shaves it and just goes cueball. I was on Propecia for a while but was told by a friend that it doesn't help thinning up front. Not sure if it's true, but it is a very expensive medicine.

I can tell you that I do. This is a major issue for any guy. It's been proven that a man's hair is a source of ego and in many instances an indication of power/control. So when one begins to notice a loss of hair it can be a very traumatic experience. In my case it's been very tough to deal with and it's not even noticable to anyone but me! The fact that I know that I've lost a very small amount of hair caused me to immediately run to my doctor and pay almost $60 per month for a pill that may not even work. Have some respect for the dude.

Finesteride (marketed as Propecia)
This is a treatment for male pattern baldness which is licenced in the UK but only on private prescription, not on the NHS. It is one of a class of drugs called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. Since 5-alpha-reductase is the enzyme which causes the conversion of testosterone into DHT, inhibiting this with finesteride should, in theory, stop hair loss. In fact, finesteride was originally developed for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition in which the prostate gland becomes enlarged through the action of DHT.
Good luck with whatever treatment you chose
