^^ The Police closed down Cream:
Clubber fighting for life after collapsing in Cream nightclub
A CLUBBER was left fighting for his life and three more men collapsed after they took a mystery liquid drug at a top Liverpool nightclub.
Police visited Cream, in Wolstenholme Square, in the early hours of Saturday morning, after the men, aged 25, 34, 23 and 18, fell seriously ill. A clear liquid in a soft drink bottle, believed to be some form of drug, had been consumed by the men at around 1am.
Officers arrived at the nightspot and three of the men were taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital and placed on ventilators. Symptoms included difficulty with breathing and the most critically ill victim had a brain scan.
Merseyside Police said that the mixture of alcohol and drugs was extremely dangerous and could easily have proved fatal. All four have made a full recovery and detectives arrested two men, on Saturday, aged 27 and 21, on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. They were bailed pending further enquiries and forensic tests are ongoing on the liquid after toxicology samples were taken from the men. Early indications showed the liquid had a similar effect to Ecstasy, and police said they had received similar reports of it being circulated on the Liverpool club scene.
Cream was closed down by police at around 3am on Saturday after discussion with the club’s management. Police believe the bottled liquid was brought into the club from outside and openly passed around revellers.
There is no suggestion the drug was forced on the men who fell ill, or that their drinks had been spiked. Chf Insp Kevin Johnson, of Merseyside Police, said: “It has been carried in a normal soft drinks bottle, and until we do actually identify what this is, there is a concern that there's clearly a drink out there that is certainly very dangerous.
“And it could have had quite dire consequences, and it may have even led to the loss of some lives this morning.”
Advice was given to door staff to prevent clubbers entering the premises with their own drinks. Over the weekend, police used Bluetooth equipment to send warning text messages to club goers attending Cream and other venues in the city centre.
A spokeswoman for Cream said: “Our main concern is the health and safety of our customers, and we’re shocked that those involved have passed around a supposedly harmless drink which has ultimately ended with serious consequences.
“During our summer recess we will be reviewing our door policy and will continue to work with the police to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”sigpicSimonR
