Re: Drag me to hell (2009)
you couldn't even start to get serious with a quote like that bro. so pathetic i'm amazed the guy from the Mac adverts even decided to get into a movie like this. absolute rubbish imo. stole the movie's length worth of time from my evening and even wasted my buzz on it.
and that indian guy in the movie. wtf. lame like he had it nailed to his headwww.mjwebhosting.com

Sam Raimi and his brother did. This is pretty typical of their actual style of writing when you consider the Evil Dead trilogy and Darkman.Comment

Quarantine/Rec, Exorcism of Emily Rose (this one set the bar for me), 30 Days of Night (better in comparison), One Missed Call (better in comparison), Cave - just to name a few. The movie lost it's entire "horror" aspect when the freaking goat got pissedwww.mjwebhosting.com

Re: Drag me to hell (2009)
Yeah, but while the first Evil Dead was played pretty straight faced, the sequel and Army of Darkness were not without their skewered sense of humor. Even when Sam Raimi directed The Quick And The Dead, there were still trace elements of it lingering around.
He started doing more straight faced stuff with A Simple Plan and For The Love Of the Game, probably seeking a bit more street cred in Hollywood so he could get more regular and better paying work, which led eventually to him doing Spider-Man. I saw this as him going back to his roots, and touching back on what he was doing in Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness - twisted, silly and some pretty good scares.Comment

Re: Drag me to hell (2009)
I was confusing Rami with M. Night Shyamalan for a minute there...I prefer Shyamalan's movies. Not that they are comparable really.
It was fun while it lasted...Comment

Re: Drag me to hell (2009)
a satirical horror? like killing while laughing? True enough, I'm open to ideas of different types of horrors and people "getting" it. Sort of like the different types of humor from standups. I never got into Seinfeld and at the same time a lot of my friends can't get into Ron White.
so fair play there sir.www.mjwebhosting.com

Re: Drag me to hell (2009)
Exactly. Horror and comedy are tough enough genres on their own - and people are sometimes very specific about the tone/style they like (ie for Horror - gothic, splatterpunk, slasher, gore, etc. For comedy: situational, absurdist, observational, etc).
Mixing the two together is really, really tricky - and it's why there's a very short list of horror films that have satirical element that are successful. Setting the proper tone for something like that is key, and can make or break the movie. Drag Me To Hell is a tough sell to some audiences that enjoy horror films - some people feel that the comedic element takes away from the horror element of their film - they don't really feel that they can take the element of menace seriously. Having that balance of the two is really tough to maintain, and won't work for everyone.
Some peeps prefer their satirical horror to be more in the vein of something like the original Dawn of the Dead - very straight faced and a bit more interpretive and not quite as blunt. Others prefer something more along the lines of what they were doing with something like Dog Soldiers or Shawn of the Dead - a willingness to be silly and over the top.Comment
