The first one was fucking garbage. The only good thing that came from it was the documentary Overnight that showed Troy Duffy's delusions of grandeur and getting pwnd by Harvey Weinstein when his ego exceeded his ambitions.

absolute classic indeed! prob my favorite underground cult classic as well. been awaiting this for a long time now, no doubt; and without bogging myself down with critical expectations yet, i thought the trailer was okay, and am really stoked for this, regardless. werd.

i understand. you seem to come across as one rather enthralled with the sycophantic politics of film; care to delinate as to why the first one was so terrible though, highsteppa? also, i wanted to know the reason why william defoe will not be returning? i reckon someone had said that he just kinda "grew out of it" in the youtube video pertaining to all saints day - years ago. It just seemed like such a sloppily, pasted together film (something that was pretty much confirmed what I suspected from the footage Overnight showed). While Troy Duffy, to his credit, can make an action scene look dramatic by going all slow motion (something that John Woo was doing at the time way before him - and with a fuck of a lot more complexity, and Sam Peckinpaw before Woo), he still goes way over the top when it comes to getting a performance out of his actors.

The scenes where Willem Dafoe is recreating the places where the brothers had been involved in a shootout, he's practically shouting his lines throughout the film. Him in drag came pretty far out of left field and Billy Connolly's Il Duce character was just too wild and random. A lot of it was re-written on the fly because of budget restrictions after the fallout with Weinstein happened. The film is all attitude - I'm sure there's a good script in there somewhere, but it got lost and muddled with Duffy's bullshit antics and ego and watered down the themes of the story with the situation he had put himself into with his antics. There's a statement about vigilantism in there, but it gets pretty much blown out of the water when Duffy turns up the bombast to 11 when an action sequence is put together.

Maybe it's the fact that when the script got picked up and the comparisons of Troy Duffy to Quentin Tarantino when it happened, or maybe it's just the fact that the project turned out to be such a disappointment when it hit theatres - the movie just didn't live up to the expectations that it claimed to have when they were making it.

As for Dafoe, it could be a number of reasons but I suspect the following: Harvey Weinstein at the time wielded an incredible amount of power when he was running Miramax, and he did make Troy Duffy a leper in the film community. He might have realized that associating with Duffy might be harmful to his career - this film while it does have its cult following, it wasn't a darling of a movie with critics. A lot of people are saying the only reason why this sequel got made was because Weinstein is starting over with his own studio - he doesn't hold as much power as he did when he was in charge of Miramax.

I also know some people who worked on the film when it was shooting here in Toronto, and they said that there was a vibe that a some involved in making it, including some of the actors, wished they could have backed out of the project or worked on something else.

funny now they are doing a sequel. I guess it didn't turn out that bad for them after making double the money.

I think it's a decent movie, probably won't ever watch it again though.

It was fun while it lasted...

                        It looks like shit.

I liked the idea of the first one but do feel that it isn't that great movie that everyone makes it out to be.
