    Re: my new HTPC + Nas server

    The GMA950 wont do well with HD but GMA950HD (iirc the model) will do pretty well. I read up on them because I was considering the slimline desktop from Gateway.

    Though they have a newer one with a Corei3 processor, 6 GB Ram, W7 64BIT, 1 TB HD space for a measly $550 and it did very well on HD tests.

      one of those links was the GMA 950 and the other was Intel Poulsbo integrated GMA500, be careful I dont know if they are the actual HD chips or not.

      6GB of ram? damn thats crazy. You could just store the movie in RAM and play it from there to cut down on HD access times

        you could if windows would let you, but with all the file crunching, converting, remuxing, unzipping that my media center pc does, it could be well worth it for sure.

          That's why I do that stuff on linux, this is all it takes:

          Code:
          $ cp *.mkv /dev/shm
          $ cd /dev/shm
          $ mplayer -fs *.mkv

            Right on homie, that's a kick ass setup, mad props.

            My VoIP, and Home Tech Integration Professor just showed us how to config a network attached server, printers, etc. on a home or business network last night for lecture - very interesting. Next week is RAID 0 1 5 redundancy, blah. I hope to take my CompTIA A+ and DHTI certs/exams this summer. Wish me luck!

                Kamal above mentioned:

                The GMA950 wont do well with HD but GMA950HD
                According to the specs from the newegg site, I dont see the actual GMA950HD chipset listed as the video processor.

                    my bad, its not the GMA9500, the 2 video chipset decoders are X4500 vs. the X4500HD

                    (I remembered the HD at the end)

                      Re: my new HTPC + Nas server

                      this could work out pretty good

                      For HTPC owners looking for the perfect couch-borne computer keyboard, this Rii Mini Wireless Keyboard looks like Natuzzi nirvana, packing QWERTY (with function keys) and a touchpad all in a package that should fall to the hand more comfortably than that Scientific Atlanta remote your cable company has saddled you with. There's even a laser pointer, making it a snap to indicate strange shapes and symbols seen on Lost episodes -- or to taunt the cats when an episode's fifteenth plot twist leaves you disinterested. We're not sure exactly what Brando means when it says the thing has "iPhone style," but despite that we're liking it, and the $92 $49 price isn't completely outrageous. YouTube video review embedded after the break for the doubters. Update: A few bargain-hunting commenters pointed out that this is available for $48.99 over at TomTop. That's savings you can count on, folks! Update II: Seems the product page has been yanked from TomTop, and one tipster says that the company is no longer replying to requests about his order. Buyer beware.

                              Do you know what kind he bought i.e. the old Drobo or Drobo S / Drobo FS? The newer ones are much quieter.

                              EDIT: yes he has the drobo 2.0 (older one) with Firewire. Moreover he's on a MAC. These things sing along with Windows based PCs.
