Well, we definitely thought about this. One of the challenges is to make sure we can get the music genre for each event listing. If you notice, we have a music genre column. Soon, that column will always be populated and will be used to send you only relevant events.

Among other planned enhancements to resolve this issue, you will also be able to sort by music genre so you'll always know what you're signing up for. So if you tell us that you like house/tech-house/deep-house, we're going to show you more of those kinds of events.

No, the Facebook application is just the beginning. Stage 1 in introducing a global event portal, so all this data will be available for the whole world to see, even non-Facebook users.

We are branding this tool as the ultimate tool for music fans - the world's first global event suggestion/recommendation engine. Right now, we are focusing on electronic dance music because frankly, that's our team's collective passion. We promote it, we throw dance parties, we produce the music.

But there's no reason why we can't open this up to other music genres. Future releases will also cater to all music fans. Users will simply just have to toggle their music preferences in order to see events of those music types.

so many nice things about those apps do not live long enough in front of our eyes
to realize if they're bad or good..
..cuz of the global opinion about face apps being nothing but a piece of scum spam, which they mostly are :s

wish u luck with this one, sounds interesting,
especially if ur planning to make it bigger than just a fb app.. thats something.

              ^ well said.

people really don't utilize facebook applications as much as we're lead to believe. users are starting to use them less and less as the social utility in question becomes diluted due to age. it's a fad, imho, but more importantly they make ya vulnerable as hell. the problem emanates from facebook itself, beacuse they allow developers to assimilate your data and use it in any way they fashion. there's really no exact way we can know which apps store data or not. what's even more of a bust is that the apps your friends are using can collect your data through it's portal.

best of luck though man. hopefully it's success is reconciled with your proclaimed branding.

So few people seem to be aware of this !! I Identity thieves are having a ball with these social networks. !! Although I'm not sure why I am worried about it, somehow I don't think anyone would want to steal my identity

Re: New Facebook application for dance music fans!

it seems like a good idea, but maybe using facebook as your platform isnt the best idea? i know if i click on something and it takes me to a page that mentions it needs to access my information, it gets blocked immediately

i would imagine a pretty large amount of people when travelling are already well versed on whats going on in any particular area through many other avenues ie: communication with people from that area, or just being in the know as far as the scene itself

take this forum for example, pretty much any where i'd be travelling i'm pretty confident there is someone here that can guide me in the right direction as far as events going on in that region

just my opnion mate, best of luck with this, but as you said, this feedback is valuable.. maybe making this service a separate entity from fb, but use facebook to promote it?

Totally, very helpful! I guess I speak from the perspective of a very regular Facebook user. I use it day in and day out. My job as a promoter of dance music events is a big reason for that.

The reason why we chose Facebook as our first project is the same reason why all these companies are jumping into developing iPhone applications... that's where all the active users are. If you're building your first fast-food joint, you're better off building it by an exit off the highway. With smart-PDA phones, Apple has effectively created a whole new mobile platform with the iPhone. Think about what it takes to build a solid userbase for a standalone website (how long did it take for mercuryserver.com to get to where it is?). And if you're an event website, how long it took to get enough users to where promoters want to promote events on your website.

That said, going back to Facebook, where an application can get 5 million installs in one day (Farmville), I know that the biggest issue I always had with events in Facebook is that I get invited to way too many extraneous events on a daily basis that it's extremely difficult to sift through all my invitations to find the right event to go to tonight, tomorrow, this weekend and beyond. I get invited to events on Facebook all the time but I since I can't keep my events organized, I many times end up missing them, unless I have my friend remind me.

So we set out to create an application that could fix that very issue on Facebook and build an intelligent personal events manager.... some way to get all the quality dance music events in my area displayed to me, without the nonsense. Also, if there are quality events in my area that I don't know about because I don't know the promoters, then how about you show me that too... enter EventIQ - the ultimate tool for dance music fans.

Like I mentioned, this Facebook application is just the start... We're working on the stand-alone web portal for EventIQ as well as mobile applications for smart PDA devices. We'll be automatically recommending events to you based on your profile interests, musical preferences, favorite DJ's, venue type, etc. Our goal is to offer the best possible music event recommendations to every user, regardless of location.

Here's another reason for "Why Facebook?" Because of their open API model. The Facebook platform is relatively new. This space is a big, wide-open, sparsely colonized expanse of the internet. And there's an enormous amount of data out there, readily available for businesses to repurpose for their own use. Of course there's a bit of a Wild Wild West feeling to it (for now) and you're going to have the bullshit developers in there first trying to get rich quick (no surprise there), but I assure you, Facebook is actively seeking those guys and shutting them down on a daily basis. Those guys give guys like us a bad name, for sure. New rules and regulations are being put up every single day to protect Facebook users from unscrupulous marketers and application developers. Further, for a fee ($375), you can apply to have your application approved by Facebook (FB Verified) so that the public can know that you are honest and forthright about your intentions as a Facebook application developer (our application is in).

There's big money to be made if you're legit and you make killer Facebook applications. Facebook started FBFUND (http://www.facebook.com/fbFund), "fbFund is a $10M seed fund supporting developers and entrepreneurs on Facebook Platform. We provide funding, mentoring, and marketing."

Think about it... there's only one place where all your friends are, connected, communicating on a truly Web 2.0 platform today. When it comes to social networking, let's face it - Facebook is the superhighway. They have passed over 300 million users worldwide.

here's an old article but a good read about Facebook applications and the Facebook Platform
Ever since May 24, 2007, the blogosphere has been abuzz with news about Facebook opening its platform to developers. The buzz is completely justified, though, because unlike other APIs, Facebook’s allows developers to take advantage of an existing base of over 30 million active users. Anyone who understands the power o
