This week’s exclusive Clash DJ mix sees a stalwart of the house scene behind the decks – Joey Negro. Excelling as a producer, DJ and remixer, Joey – aka Dave Lee – has been instrumental in shaping contemporary house, disco and funk output for the best part of two decades.
Releasing classic material under a host of different monikers (Jakatta, Sessomato and Raven Maize, to name but a few), Joey began his music career proper by working at record shops in the late eighties, including Rough Trade, before starting his own label and getting stuck into producing his own massively well-received tracks, including ‘Must Be The Music’, ‘American Dream’ and ‘Forever Together’.
Joey’s exclusive mix showcases the eclectic taste which has earned him so much acclaim over the years, from the retro Jackin house vibes of Italo-disco act House Device to some soulful psychedelia via Motown act Undisputed Truth.
The last section of Joey’s mix moves seamlessly into a variety of funk textures, including the sleazy hooks of Dawson Cliff’s superb ‘I Don’t Know If I Can Make It’ and the delightful harmonies of The Jacksons in ‘Heartbreak Hotel’, before finishing beautifully with the Phenomenal Handclap Band’s ‘You’ll Disappear’.
Here, as ever, Joey Negro shows that the seamless production ethic and ear for a killer hook which found him fame are as intact and healthy as they’ve ever been. Classic stuff.
