Sophie Atay Appeal - please read

Folks, I just saw this on the news, and I thought I'd run it past you.

    It's for a good cause...

"Sophie Atay was born fit and healthy on 15 November 2007 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. One day whilst drying Sophie after her usual bath her mother felt a lump on the left side of her tummy. After numerous and frustrating hospital visits over a 10 day period Sophie was diagnosed with neuroblastoma stage 4 (high risk) on Monday 16 February 2009. Sophie's family are now looking to raise funds to take her to the Memorial Slone Kettering Hospital in New York for treatment."

sophie-appeal.org is your first and best source for all of the information you’re looking for. From general topics to more of what you would expect to find here, sophie-appeal.org has it all. We hope you find what you are searching for!

People are throwing money at the appeal. It raised about £10000 in the last hour.

Her mother (on the news) was asking for 500,000 people to give £1 each, to raise the required £500 k. The family have 12 days to raise the money.

I realize a lot of people may not be flush in these dark times, but £1 will go a long way.

          Thank you.

When I was watching the little girl on the news, it was very sad. I suppose my wife having a miscarriage a few weeks back spurred me on to ask people here to donate a little something.

Didi, thank you. It's been a difficult time, but we're getting there. Watching the little girl struck a real nerve with me, and I just thought I'd ask one and all. Anything and everything counts, that's the beauty of it.

And you're right, re-framing everything is always a good thing, and certainly does help

btw, I like to give to charity whenever I can - Could you pin-point me in any particular direction?

Micko, really sorry to hear that buddy. My boy is 10 months old, and since he arrived anything to do with sick kids, miscarraiges etc fucking kills me. I hope you guys are doing OK. The positive is you know you can get pregnant, I hope it happens for you both soon as.

I'm donating to Sophie's appeal right now

Well, my charities are close to home, I look at how much money goes to the actual work, how much it effects the future , and if it is secular.

Basically I have two. The Smith Family, we can actually help sponsor an Australian child's education. Which not only helps that child but fosters future attitudes towards education and charity.

The other is the Allanah and Madelaine Foundation which deals with children under threat in any way at all now. One of the neat things they do, is each child is given a package of not only clothes but toys, books etc, which is that child's alone to take where ever they go .

Close to home works for me. If we work on what we know I think we can do the most. Obviously when there are things like the bushfires etc. I find a little more.

For my family it's about autism as it has touched my family firsthand, but really anything where people need help. Anything we do in life that can lift a person's spirit or lend a hand to someone who needs it makes me feel warm and tingly. Bravo guys

Thanks Jeff , but I totally agree about helping one another - people have the capacity to really make a difference by making small contributions, in whatever form that takes.

For me personally, I just want to say thanks for all your words of support (you know who you are ) I really do appreciate it.

My wife, as it turns out, works in a special needs school, where children have moderate to severe autism. Some of the kids have come on a long way with the hard work of patient and caring staff.
