OK, I feel like a complete dumbass. Can anyone shed some light on how the hell this whole thing works? I grasp that I need to share stuff to be able to download other stuff, but I'm fuzzy on how to go about sharing my stuff -- do I upload it to a web site somewhere?
I'm puzzled. Is there a resource out there that can help me answer someof these real basic questions.
Thanks in advance for any guidance.Comment

Thanks in advance for any guidance.BitTorrent is a leading software company with popular torrent client software for Windows, Mac, Android, and more. Download now.
you don't need to 'share' anywhere...as you download the file off of other users, you are also uploading to other users as well...spreading the traffic around so to speak. Think of it as a pyramid...the top starts the transfer to others, who in turn go to others and so on, until things eventually break up.
The idea to keep the file going is to keep your window open as long as you can to upload to others, even after you finish downloading...a good 'moralistic' amount is to upload the same as you download...so if you take a 80MB set, you should upload at least that much (if not a bit more) to let others also try and get the file.
Some sites utilize ratio upload/download (similar to old FTP ways), that'll prevent leechers...usually the amounts though are very fair.
If you wish to share something, you create a 'torrent' file which contains a hash key for others to connect to and grab....this torrent file also contains a URL for a 'tracker' which helps monitor bandwidths as to who's uploading/downloading....this torrent gets uploaded somewhere where people can grab it and start on it....you essentially 'seed' the file(s) by uploading them from your hard drive to others until a few have the full version, so that they can continue to send to others, etc.FM

I just started doing the whole torrent thing a few weeks back. Its really great if you want to get tv shows and some music. Like every p2p program, it has its +'s and -'s. Its always a nice option to have if all else failsComment

Azureus works very well for me. Thanks CZ.
But as someone posted there's not much in the way of house music and live sets on there. Although I did get Frank Sinatra's Reprise collection and all of Beethoven's symphonies.Cat formerly known as Cheshire

Actually, not even close. www.torrentbits.org was the greatest BT site on the planet. They had shows like South Park and The Simpsons on the site before they even aired here in Denver. All the newest TS's, and I always maxed out my connection at 200-300 kbps. I had shared like 175 GB and always had better then a 1:1 ratio.
All the great sites are closing though folks. Something is going on in the BT community, and it looks like it goes pretty deep."The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws." - Tacitus (55-117 A.D.)

I have been using both ABC and BitComet, and both are OK. I particularly like the latter one since it allows you to select files that you want to download from the torrent, and not always all the files. Can azureus do the same?

Yes ut can. Once you start a torrent in azureus, right click it and select "File Details" and then go to the last tab "Files" in there you can pick which files you don't want to download from that torrent and which you do by right clicking the ones you don't want and selecting "Priority, Do not Download"
I know exactly what you mean, because I was once trying to get just a couple episodes for the Simpsons, and the only torrent I found with decent speed was one with all 15 seasons (so far) in one torrent So I started it and only highlighted like 2-3 files.
