Late Report - John Digweed [Bedrock @ Shindig]

Just getting around to this - was wiped out yesterday after travelling back

Anyway - had a really good night. Travelled up with me ol' mucka Dan (Domnal) - initial fears that the night could be wiped out by torrential rain (club is in a basement) were allayed. There was even an early Twilo moment in the set when the fire alarm went off and the sound cut out - Diggers had his headphones on and was checking out the mixer and 1000's thinking it was a technical problem

Legends is a strange club - a real late 80's throwback and I think the sound system dated back to the decor. Still the low ceiling was a plus as was reasonably priced beer (2 x Kronenburg 1664's for £5). Scott Bradford played a very credible warm up set (again a + point as some of the non-London warm ups have been poor this year).

Diggers (pic from Friday above) was scheduled to play at 1 a.m. ... but started 5 mins early (I don't suppose Sasha ever pops on here to take note !). 1st track was the deep house of Oleg Poliakov - House Of The Sun [Circus Company CCS036] ... it's on the last two Transitions and bloody good. I'm not the best of Trainspotters and the 1664's do dampen the memory a bit - there was one of the Marc Marzenit tracks + a remix of Emerald and the Maher Daniel remix of Rumblefish.

Never one to stand still it was all new music - a really enjoyable 3+ hrs (a better sound system would have taken it to another level) and the crowd absolutely loved it. The last hour in particular was really good with some killer tracks including a blinding progressive trance one (sorry John !) towards the end.

A very good NE crew out - great to bump into Andy Newland again (who was on photography duty for the clubbers ... some of his work's below) and also nice to bump into Hydrosonic who seemed to have a great night and will prob have a few more ID's + hopefully some vids for you.

Pics (hover over them to enlarge) :

On a side point we stopped of at Heston Blumenthal's Little Chef in York on the way back ... Michelin starred roadside food and great hangover cures. The Scottish Scampi, Burgers, Fries and Braised Ox Cheeks are all highly recommended

That's all .. you've had the pics, so now I can STFU !

Good to hear another stellar performance from Diggers!! He was playing Lush! last night and i couldn't make it due to chronic stomach pains. Fucking completely raging to say the least.

Reading on Lush! message board that he dropped Henry Saiz remix of Lamur as last track.

    As i say, raging!!

Shame about the venue. I used to go to their old venue a few years back. I can't remember the name of it now, it was called the Riverside in the early 90's but had changed since. Last time I went was for the 2002 birthday for Deep Dish. And the wimmin dirty as you like

Edit I think it was Foundation

Maybe the potential torrential rain-hair damage-thing put them off ... assume Diggers arrived in the shower cap from his 5* hotel

Re: Late Report - John Digweed [Bedrock @ Shindig]

Amazing night! Diggers brought the vortex to Newcastle (again!) Yes, those are my videos; sound's a touch distorted in quite a few of them, I'll concede, owing more to my camera than the soundsystem, which I thought was canny enough! But that could be down to one or a combination of the following reasons:
                a) The only other time I've seen Diggers this year was at Air, which hardly sports the greatest soundsystem ever, so a bit of relativity comes into play;
                b) I was tipsy by the time he came on (£2.50 for a vodka-and-lemonade - bargain!)

The lasers and lighting were plus points for the venue, but it's the first time I'd been there, and it usually hosts rock nights apparently Shindig was at Riverside, then at Foundation, then moved to Digital (sporting a Funktion One), where it resided, weekly, from 2006 till the middle of this year.

But, yes, Digweed rocked it: quality music - deep, spacey tunes with big drops, some cunning and elongated blends between them, and FX to heighten the tension. Brilliant.
This was set-up perfectly, as Simon has described, by Scott Bradford, who always does a good job of warming-up the crowd
It was great to catch up with Simon and Dan, the "usual suspects"
I was worried that the fire alarm was a by-product of it being Friday 13th (though I'm not normally superstitious), and was tickled when Digweed just shrugged his shoulders as to the cause of the disruption. Now, perhaps my ears were shot from being in the club 3+ hours, but I didn't think the fire alarm was that loud? So I did initially suspect something was amiss in the CDs department He seemed to be having a great night, anyway, did Diggers.
The crowd were amazing, much better atmosphere than when he played at Digital in 2007 and 2008 imo, even though his sets on both occasions merited greater responses.
                Anyway, a few (other) trainspots:
Tone Depth's 'Murder & Fingerprints' (played by Scott Bradford)
King Roc - The Beginning (Jericho Dub)
Marc Marzenit's Unexpiritualized & Not Assigned, both doing some damage!
Union Jack - Papillon, which is on the newly resurgent Platipus
                Final two tunes:
Tone Depth's Rumblefish (Maher Daniel remix) & WOW's Future Perfect (Henry Saiz remix)
My other videos (yes, I went a touch video-barmy that night!):

His hair isn't looking as wild these days, mind, at least not compared to the Shindig poster..
Alas, that was the case re: sausage-fest. Mind, a few of the barmaids were pretty fit... I think that's why I was hammered by the end
