DJing what's so unique about cd and laptop dj's

Im not a dj at all but whenever I see those dj's (my friend is a laptop dj), I cringe cause it just shows you arent a real dj. I think vinyls are what bring justice to djing. yes Im aware that AVB doesnt use vinyls anymore but he's an exception because he's always on the move 24/7.

I agree in general. The smoothness and precision of the real vinyl cannot be compromised!

However, carrying bags and flight cases with vinyls is not always the best solution for a traveller. Especially the traveller DJ carries extra equipment like Midi Controllers e.t.c. for realtime effects and productions at his/her lives...

But yes, there are many people who think they are DJs just because they own a laptop and a few tracks.

like I honestly think laptop dj is an oxymoron. maybe it works for them but then again I dont have the cred to totally slander them.

        my general thought is

        who cares?

it is intriguing to me. something "newer" and refreshing. for sure it is convenient.

I've been taking my laptop to gigs for a while now - i wouldn't consider myself a "laptop dj" though. Partly because i don't have any sound software installed.

I have found though, nothing beats a good game of minesweeper to fend off those pre-gig nerves

I use my Macbook to DJ and I don't consider myself a laptop DJ. I started back in 2000 with vinyl. And I still use my Technic 1200s. Using Serato has been amazing as far as saving money on buying records. I would say I'm a digital DJ. I still use vinyl to mix with. My laptop is just my record box. I also use my EFX 500, CLoops Sampler and my Xone 62.

I would love to upgrade to Traktor so I can take advantage of the 4 deck option. But would you catergorize Dubfore, Hawtin, Lawler and Zabiela as laptop DJs? They all started on the wax first! Gotta advance with the times or forever show your age.

Yeah the word DJ means Disc Jockey. It has nothing to do with technology. It's a word that was made up for a certain type of person back in the 50's. We just need a new term for the people who use laptops.

And personally I can't stand watching someone stare at a tv screen while i'm trying to enjoy myself. If the DJ doesn't look like he/she is enjoying themselves. How can I be expected to...

i've seen some boring ass djs behind decks as well. it's the artist, not the medium.

^^maybe not but i much rather see him using his hands working the decks, mixer, and effex board than starting at a cpu screen and clicking a mouse and keyboard all night.

u do need a new term to describe "djs" who use laptop instead of traditional decks
