Not really. It's not like it was in any way financially motivated. Cowell et al are insanely rich and will be regardless of the fact that a bonus few hundreds of thousands of songs on thier label were sold. Cowell probably makes a couple of thousand quid from the sales of the RATM track..if that. Pocket change to him.

It was more about showing that one publicity campaign can beat another. RATM was a free online campaign, The X Factor has hours of TV, radio, and print advertsing behind it. I think it was a great campaign

Maybe they should of released a CD with 5 minutes of silence on it. That would of been a better Christmas Number 1. Simon Cowell or RATM it doesn't matter, they both sold CDs that weren't based on music. The real idiots are the people who bought either of them.

^ That would be me then. Not sure how they "weren't based on music" though.

^ you think RATM would of even made the Christmas top 40 releasing a record from donkeys years ago. Everyone just jumped on this idea that they would try and stop Simon Cowell getting the Christmas number 1. No one listened to RATM and thought "that's got a nice sound and it isn't doing anyone any harm I think I will go out an purchase that and listen to it over the Christmas period and listen to it lots". Its no different than the Chris Moyles stunt where he tried to get voted for in the DJ Mag Top 100 a few years ago.

Right, gotcha. Don't think it's quite the same as Chris Moyles though - that was self-promotion whereas this is an attempt to disrupt something that obviously annoys a lot of people. Whatever though; just thought it was quite a clever stunt...not that it really makes any difference to anything in the grand scheme of things.
