    Foursquare Etiquette

Anyone here on foursquare? I've been on it for a month or so and I have to say, for those that get it, it's a pretty handy and cool little thing. It's nice to show up somewhere without planning ahead and have some insider guidance upon arrival that is more useful than "this restaurant is good."

With that said, I have friggin' had it with people filling my twitter/facebook feed with useless posts to let me know that they stopped to get gas. A few rules I wish people would follow:

    1. Think long and hard about whether you really want all of your check-ins announced via twitter and/or facebook. I have mine set up so that if I do something noteworthy, like oust a mayor or something, it posts, but otherwise, the only people that know where I've been are the people that take the time to look. It's a social networking and advice tool, not your own personal GPS vapor-trail. This leads me to the even more important point, which is...

    2. Only check-in at interesting places. I'm not telling you not to get gas, I'm just saying that the fact that you did isn't interesting to anyone, nor can I think of any interesting tips you might be able to offer at a fucking Quicktrip. Going to Aldi? Keep it to yourself. If you'd really like to log those places to accumulate points, so be it, but FFS please turn off your twitter feed or at least go off the grid for a while. There is nothing less satisfying than hearing an alert sound for your phone and going to the trouble of walking across the room to check it, only to learn that Doug G. is at the doctor's office.

    Re: Foursquare Etiquette

A mate of mine and his Mrs have full on conversations on Facebook. They live in the same house for fuck sake.

I had MySpace, then someone talked me into signing up to Facebook just so I could view the pictures they took of me one Christmas.. I will not sign up for anymore. I don't want every man and his dog knowing what I do and who my friends are.

I quite like the idea of Foursquare though.
mjwebhosting you know it makes sense

not a euphemism, actually -- you become "mayor" of a place by visiting it more than anyone else, and when you pass an existing mayor in terms of number of visits, you "oust" him or her. It's a silly little thing that is secondary to the reason foursquare is kinda cool, IMO, but there IS something a bit satisfying about knocking someone off his perch to become the new "mayor." Also, although I'm not aware of anywhere around here that does it, I gather that there are some establishments that offer special deals to their fourquare mayors to offer an incentive for people to compete for the title by visiting often.

I'm mayor of 6 places at press time -- 2 delis I frequent for lunch and what is in my opinion the best Vietnamese place in the area, plus a few places in Vegas I popped by a few times during a recent visit. I'm expecting to be ousted from those Vegas locations pretty soon, though...

Well put Toasty, very well put...I couldn't agree more with you. If you are at an amazing concert or off on some dream vacation or something really noteworthy happens in your daily life then by all means feel free to tweet, facebook, etc.

However, I don't give a flying fuck about people doing their laundry, going to the gym with their girlfriend or what they had for their respective dinners.

Ugh! Social networking has turned many people into outright internet exhibitionists. "oh look what I did" or "wow look at how fabulous my life is"

On the other hand, I haven't heard of foursquare and will certainly check it out...sorry to rant!

I dunno, dude -- we eat there A LOT, def. one of our go-to spots. Sounds like I need to bank a few more visits just in case, though.

Thought this thread was about the correct etiquette in a group sex of four people.

                        Imagine my disappointment.
