Following a fantastic start to the 2010 studio shows last week the momentum continues as John Digweed brings us more of the very best in up front & forward thinking electronic music.

Things get underway with Tiefschwarz's "definitive take" on "Intro (From Our Minds To Yours)" from F.U.S.E.(Further Underground Sound Experiments) an old alias of Richie Hawtins and part of a digital-only compilation marking 20 influential years of the Plus 8 label (est. 1990) that he founded with John Acquaviva. Here the original three-minute overture is transformed into a ten-minute sci-tech voyage through ambient electronica and dubbed-out techno.

Next up is Liverpudlian DJ/Producer Yousef (also Promoter of the highly popular Circus nights - guests incl. Diggers). Called upon to contribute to the 3rd instalment of Cocoon's 10" series Yousef delivers an absolute stormer that was road-tested to great effect by John at fabric. With an infectious and hypnotic theme, deep groove and sweeping stuttered arpeggios underpinning the strings meets piano motif "Come Home" builds an ever increasing crescendo that washes over you. A sublime main room track.

Always one to expand your ears Diggers throws in a nice blend of deep tribal vs tech house that wouldn't be out of place on Luciano's Cadenza label, but sits equally well on Supplement Facts whose reputation continues to grow (label owner Guy Gerber featured last week). Ryan Crosson & Guti's “You’ve Got Me EP” illustrates a contemporary approach to electronic music production - here cool tribal vocals mix with a meditative marimba theme and South American percussion.

The pace picks up courtesy of another label that's been in excellent form of late. With a remix of John and Nick's monster "Tangent" already in the pipeline Belgium's Marco Bailey grows his Bedrock relationship further after Bedrock 11's "Jungle Laps". Here Marco brings us the first hot Bedrock release of the new millennium as 2010 promises to be another milestone year. "Watergate" is a dance-floor destroyer that's already left an indelible mark on the likes of Warehouse Project where it went down a storm. With a further Bedrock release planned of March alongside work for Carl Cox's brand new Intec Records Marco looks set for world domination as his sound and musical horizons continue to evolve. Marco also provides this week's guest mix.

Brand new label "Living Dream" bring us a headline first release with M.A.N.D.Y. vs. Booka Shade's "Donut". After their seminal 2005 ‘Body Language’ put both artists firmly on the EDM map M.A.N.D.Y. became hugely in-demand and Booka Shade are now regarded as one of the finest live electronic acts in the world. "Donut" is one of those tracks with an immediately recognisable theme - while it's restless rhythms and deep lying strata of microscopic pops 'n' clicks is pure M.A.N.D.Y. the manipulation of dramatic tension and darker, deeper emotional resonance come from Booka Shade. James Talk is on remix duty keeping the key elements while adding his own artistic stamp.

Buzzin' Fly is another label that is relentless in the level of outstanding productions. Alex Santos & Chris Woodward certainly don't disappoint, bringing us "Village Vanguard" named after the iconic NYC club (John "Very big at Fabric ... love it"). Centred around an irresistible Gil Evans-style orchestral jazz phrase and described as a "deep and crispy floor buster with filtered jazz-horn killer moment", this had them hanging off the ceiling on the Space Terrace in Ibiza when label owner Ben Watt dropped it.

Italy's Alex Dolby has continued to develop since "Psiko Garden" and "Hazy Way" put him on the map. After key contributions to Bedrock 11 the Ciociaria born DJ/Producer brings us "City Shark" - deep and bouncy tech-house, with hypnotic piano, retro 90's vocal and a phat bassline.

This leads us nicely to the conclusion of John's segment. Dutchman PrinsJan spent 10 years as a sound engineer, so he certainly knows his way round the studio. His clever remix of Sander Kleinenberg's classic "My Lexicon" has already been battered by Sasha. "Rituals Of Mu Mu" is almost music from another world, bringing a perfect symmetry back to F.U.S.E.s intro. PrinsJan’s trippy beats from outer space sit within multiple layers, along with banging beats, catchy hypnotic voices and eastern melodies. Put in the hands of Alex Flatner (Cocoon/Circle Music) the track has a techier edge "PrinsJan did a wonderful production with this track and I couldn’t resist doing this remix for him.”

This weeks guest mix comes from man of the moment, Marco Bailey (MB Elektronics | MB Selektions | Pornographic Recordings), who’s tracks seem to be just about everywhere at the moment. Released on Bedrock this Monday (January 25th) Marco's Watergate EP features four top notch productions (incl. an Aalberg & Angstrom Remix plus "Jonny Walker" and "Filter Bitch"). So there's no better time to give you an insight into Marco's DJing - trust me, this hour is one that you won't want to miss.

And there we have to end ... until next week and another action packed show. As always, both sets are available now in the [ms] downloads section

    Marco Bailey Bio

    ( www.marcobailey.com / www.myspace.com/marcobailey / www.twitter.com/marcobailey / www.soundcloud.com/marco-bailey )

'Rude Boy' Marco grew up in a small village in Belgium. Aged 12 he became obsessed with music, then DJing. A true hedonist and workaholic, Marco loves to spin records as much as possible, his colleagues know him for his no-nonsense & ass-kicking mentality. Marco’s all consuming drive can only be calmed by getting into the music on a daily basis in the studio. Together with best friend Tom Hades he works on tracks and DJ sets perfecting his sound and energy. On the road Marco doesn't take his job lightly, investing all his energy to give the best possible performance. With superstar status in Belgium Marco’s mixture of party techno, minimal and electronic house has spread worldwide, playing the big events (Extrema Outdoor, Awakenings, I Love Techno, Nature One, Wire, Monegros) to intimate clubs (Zouk, Ageha, Space, Industrial Copera & Chinese Laundry). With love, hard work and fantastic sounds he has succeeded in gaining worldwide recognition and is a force to reckoned with.

Killer releases on Intec Rec, Primate, Zync & Tortured, confirm his strong reputation as a producer. He has since set up MB Elektronics & MB Selektions to release high quality music and remixes by none other than Adam Beyer, Umek, Ben Sims, Smith & Selway, Claude Young, Christian Varela, Redhead, Axel Karakasis and Takaaki Itoh. November 2009 saw the MB labels 55th release. Joining forces with Christian Varela they set up Pornographic Recordings, a respected outlet for new talent. Their Pornographic parties, a great success in Spain, are continuing to become bigger and better around the World.

Although he has an expansive taste in music, techno keeps intriguing him. Despite techno growing into a bigger genre with its sub-styles in minimal, tech house and hard techno, he still discovers fascinating records in every style. This is the reason Marco's sound is so diverse and surprising. The slight change of both his production and DJ-ing styles has led to a release on John Digweed's Bedrock Records (Jungle Laps, October 2009). He has just signed with Bedrock for another 2 releases. Releases on Carl Cox's new Intec Records are planned for April and May 2010. Besides these, there are new tracks on Dataworkz UK and MB Elektronics Recordings, adding another big chapter to an already long list of releases.

Marco’s slogan for 2010: “Think outside the boxes. There is so much good music to enjoy and to play out from House to Techno and from Minimal to Tech-house. Rocking the Crowd all over the Globe! That's my mission!”

Not yet .... all for the love of the music etc.

Being a perfectionist I'm still trying to resolve issues over the fuzzy text - it's fine on powerpoint & transfer to pdf ... but jpegs are another matter - any advice (even on best fonts) would be greatly appreciated !

Most important thing with text and jpeg is to use 1x1x1 chroma subsampling else the fine edges start to leak everywhere.

          Can you use png?

Maybe ... is png better/clearer - just tried it and can't see any difference side by side?

What is "1x1x1 chroma subsampling" - is there a (free) programme that will compress to a higher quality jpeg ?
