New Worm kills phpBB Forums

This case is now over. The Santy worm is not spreading any more, thanks to Google.

Google started filtering the queries made by the worm around midnight GMT, effectively stopping the spread of the worm. Apparently they are doing this based on a combination of the search terms and the User-Agent header field.

This is from an email we got from the Google Security Team:

While a seven hour response for something like this is not outrageous,
we think we can and should do better. We will be reviewing our
procedures to improve our response time in the future to similar problems.

Oh if any of you are keeping count, the highest generation count is recorded at 22.

This generation count is like a tree structure. When board 1 is infected, it begins to infect others, those boards would be generation 2.

Google was way slow on this one....

Oh and another nifty point, the first recorded sight of the virus was 9:25 GMT on 20th of December.

you never know. Before the worm breaking lose, I would have assumed this is just a regular search engine bot indexing the website for key words. but with the outbreak of the worm since the last few days, it could be anything
