    Transitions (Episode 284) February 7th 2010

    Transitions 284

The third studio set of 2010 is uptempo, deep and well worth checking out for anyone that enjoys the live sets, turning their Transitions shows up to 11 so that the neighbours can share in the experience too ! Plus if that wasn't enough the guest mix is simply stellar, as [ms]'s very own Chloe Harris gives us a fantastic hour of music that you simply won't want to miss .

Diggers gets straight into things this week with Detroit Techno legend Carl Craig remixing British electropop duo Joe Goddard and Alexis Taylor(Hot Chip). Carl is reknowned for his technical productions that really challenge DJ's - multitalented he crosses genres using elements of jazz, house, disco edits, hiphop, soul and anything else that inspires him.

"What I'm trying to do is similar to what Miles Davis did back in the late '60 and early 70s, where it just had a feel that was timeless. But it also integrated aspects of modern technology at the same time. My whole outlook isn't to make a pop record. My whole outlook is to make a classic, timeless piece of music that I can pick up in 30 years and still be proud of." Carl Craig

If you like your Techno or just want to expand your boundaries a little then check out more of Carl's work. Carl's "One Life Stand" interpretation forms part of a 4-track promo that also includes Joris Voorn's Dusty Flower Remix, and starts with some deep banging techno before giving Hot Chip a dark and edgy Depeche Mode inspired feel.

On the back of last weeks show we get another remix from Josh Wink's last artist album, this time Freerange Records co-owner James Odell (aka Jimpster and Audiomontage) gets things "Jus Right". You'd expect nothing less from someone that's remixed such a diverse range of artists from Osunlade , Bob Marley, & Seal to Mark Knight & Funkagenda to Joris Voorn and Marc Romboy. Here Jimpster give the tech original more of a deep house feel that you can foresee going down a storm on the dancefloor.

Next up we get all dark, dirty and techy with Beyer & Dählback's remix of Pan Pot's "Confronted" a track that has been rather popular already (John played the original back on T265 and Marco Bailey's recent guest mix featured Slam's remix).

After the break "The Juan Maclean" provides the latest release of the Scion A/V Remix Project, a series highlighting artists from New York City label DFA .

Prior to becoming one of the most significant names on the DFA imprint, John MacLean was a member of Sub Pop band Six Finger Satellite, whose post-punk style was inspired by Devo, Big Black, and Suicide . Their final album. 1998's Law of Ruins was produced, engineered and mixed by future DFA head James Murphy. Following Six Finger Satellite's break up, MacLean took a haitus from music before becoming re-inspired to take the sound of his defunct band to the dancefloor, retaining flashes of post-punk and '70s experimental electronics while grafting bits of early Euro-disco, electro, Detroit techno, and Chicago house. During the early 2000s, MacLean also became fairly prolific as a remixer, with Air ("Surfing on a Rocket"), Chromeo ("Me and My Man"), Chicken Lips ("White Dwarf"), and Roy Davis, Jr. ("I Have a Vision") just a few of the acts who sought him out.

This 4 track EP, “The Future Will Come” has been remixed by Sh*t Robot, Gavin Russom, Canyons and House of House. Though 2009 saw the first release from fellow New Yorkers House of House, the duo has been rooted in the history of deep, soulful house music for quite some time. Their rub of “A Human Disaster” is the most energetic offering on this release, here we get a real uptempo, muti-rhythmic and cleverly arranged extravaganza that is one of those tracks that we'd never find in a month of Sundays ... but is one of those unexpected treats JD throws in from time to time.

Next up is Southampton's Alan Fitzpatrick (Drumcode, Figure, Bedrock, 8 Sided Dice) whose music has really taken off these part 18 months, culminating in future classic "Reflections". Here "Mouthwash" shows off Alan's darker driving techno side.

Following on from T282's "Intro" a couple of weeks back we get a further insight onto the batch of remixes celebrating Plus 8's back catalogue. Here Layo & Bushwack! give us an uber cool update on Hawtin's space-tech F.U.S.E. psuedoname and a real dimensional intrusion.

John's hour of Transitions is rounded off very nicely with a newie on DJ Hell's label "International Deejay Gigolo" from Psychonauts (Pablo Clements of U.N.K.L.E. and Berlin-based Brit, Paul Mogg), with Psycatron on remixing duty. Deep tech house of the very highest order and the perfect lead in to .....

This weeks guest is someone that is very close to Mercuryserver's heart, pillow humping loving Progno Queen Chloe Harris.

Chloe's mix is simply unmissable. Seemlessly blending together 21 tracks Chloe takes the listener on a musical journey with elements of deep, progressive and tech house. Chloe has an ear for a melody and creates a fantastic vibe that is perfect weekend listening, as well as making you want to shake your ass and get down and groove (damn ... how did we get back on that pillow humping subject).

Trust me, Chloe is a real talent - her mix is serious serious stuff, and one that that will reward the listener with fresh nuances each time they replay it.

So grab Chloe's guest mix and John's hour, which as always, are in your ever so reliable [ms] download section

Like all the best DJ's Chloe's primary interest is sharing great music. This has taken her from working in Seattle record shops as a child to featuring in some of the worlds best record boxes as an adult.

After working in records shops from age 14 she moved to record shop / radio station Groovetech.com in 2000 and started her first radio show 'Further'. This early opportunity to showcase her diverse sound to thousands of international listeners made her hungry for more, so in 2002 she started B-sides' on Proton Radio with license for a more experimental approach. This has led to prestigious guests such as Ellen Allien, Marco Carola, and Lusine as well as allowing Chloe to explore every inch of her vast record collection.

Her shows must have caught the ear of John Digweed because in 2004 he asked her to showcase on his internationally syndicated Kiss FM Transitions program. As her worldwide profile started to rise Chloe played from LA to Warsaw, San Francisco to Budapest, fitting in her debut at John's Bedrock 6th Birthday in between. Most of 2005 was spent flitting between Europe and North America with highlights including another Bedrock London gig and the opportunity to play techno at Detroit's legendary club, The Works.

In 2006 Ministry Of Sound took her on the Baltic Sea Tour headlining clubs in Lithuania, Latvia, and Finland. In the summer John Digweed requested her warm up services for the first transtions tour of the US. As her reputation for trippy deep and groovy warm up sets spread Jimmy Van M had her open his nights from Seattle to Mexico City, the success of which led to another two Mexico trips that year.

In 2007 her profile went up another notch after her production work caught the attention of Dubfire, Hernan Cattaneo, James Zabiela, as well as John Digweed and Jimmy Van M. She remixed Petter, Pole Folder, Sam Ball, as well as releasing her 12" debut single 'Skooch' on Mashtronic Records, featuring a highly acclaimed Oliver Lieb remix. Chloe rounded out the year with the 3rd Transitions Tour and slots at two of the worlds biggest dance festivals, Global Gathering in the UK, and V-Fest in Vancouver, as well as flying back to play in Kosovo, Cyprus, and Lithuania.

In 2008 Chloe has already gone around the world, going from Riff Raff in Middlesbrough, to her debut tour through Japan, playing at legendary club Womb, as well as hopping over to the island of Matsuyama to play Bibros. While still touring, she continues her production work with a few new remixes as well as a couple new singles, and hopes to find more ways to share music by starting her own Further record label.

Of late Chloe has been busy in the studio as well as playing shows in South America to tremendously receptive and appreciative audience. 2010 starting off with Chloe playing alongside John Digweed in Seattle. so there's a lovely symmetry to the timing of her Transitions appearance.

We all very much look forward to hearing a lot more from Chloe as the year progresses

As Pete Tong used to say ... Reeeespect !

Good write up as usual, but change the font colour for Chloe's tracklist, can hardly see it.
