Transitions 285
Another superlative Transitions this week, showcasing some of the very latest in electronica (including several promo's) T285 crosses the sphere of genres - from Tech to Progressive to Techno ... and from down-tempo and eclectic to upbeat to banging !! This week Diggers produces his own version of the Valentines Day Massacre with some storming tracks guaranteed to blow apart your speakers.
T285 starts with a very up front remix of Berlin's melodramatic pop partnership elle p. and iftah from an EP slated for March release. Already charted by Tiefschwarz, "Sick Liar" has been taken apart and cleverly re-assembled into a very cool piece of tech house by Parisian trio dOP (featured on VonStrokes' fabric 46 and Sebo K's Watergate 04).
DJ Three was a long time fixture of Florida's legendary Simons and former resident at Twilo - unsuprisingly Three is held in very high esteem by cogniscenti in the Electronic Dance Music world that really appreciate true talent. Known for his unique productions and signature DJ sound that embraces house, techno and beyond Three gives us an unsigned mash-up that is both eclectic and poignant - at times it reminds you of one of the downtempo Invol2ver tracks that Sasha and Charlie May came up with - fusing the Berlin sound with NYC artistic creativity "When Love Feels Like" is dark and very very beautiful. |
Martin Landsky's productions and remixes have been a regular feature on Transitions. Here we get a re-interpretation of his epic 1000 miles which features on John's masterful Space Discoteca set from 2006 + his "best of" appraisal of the years releases.
Martin's "Werkshau" EP is an unmixed compilation gathering a hand picked selection of the producer‘s favourite cuts - the music that stands for all that he loves, summing up the Landsky sound. Here the seminal "1000 Miles" is re-interpreted and brought up-to date, with Landsky‘s "2000 Miles". A strong driving powerhouse of reduced acid signals and hypnotic synth phrases, it's the sound of Martin Landsky, Future, Present and Past.
Next the vibe goes upbeat with São Paulo's Gui Boratto's "Azzurra" - all strummed rockin' guitars meeting electronic wizardry via pop synths|vocals for another surefire hit. It seems that Boratto can do no wrong at the moment - already a significant and talented producer, Gui mixes the latest Renaissance release, which has already had some great feedback.
After the break John returns with some serious serious techno via an up front promo from Sébastien Léger slated for release on Dubfire's SCI+TEC label. This and Layo And Bushwacka!'s newy "The Longest Day" seem perfect for Diggers' Berlin return at WEEK END this coming Thursday, and work rather nicely alongside each other.
Lausanne's Mirko Loko takes his sound from Detroit-inspired techno to the subtle stripped-down side of house, DJ'ing at the DEMF, WMC, Circoloco (Ibiza) and Cocoon. With an EP on Loco Dice’s Desolat imprint and solo album on Luciano’s Cadenza, Mirko's work merits further investigation. "The Longest Day" is wrenched from its percussive layered deep grooves as Mirko Loko takes this release a stride or two tougher - he locks down the groove, but gives things a tough, techy edgy feel
... then just as the vocals and darkness seem to completely disorientate you, the haze clears as a glow radiates above the horizon as 2000000 Suns appear to show you the path to true nirvana.
"The single's two tracks, 2000000 Suns & Feniksas, the artwork is all in-house Bedrock, part of the reason I went with them is they've got a strong visual identity. Gotta say I'm loving just being an artist for this release and letting other people do their thing" King Unique.
Next up is a huuuuuuuuge (© Pete Tong) track - progressive monster "2000000 Suns" is further proof of a post-minimal revolution for people that prefer something rather more substantial than a kick drum and snare snoozefest. This forthcoming release is yet another coup for Bedrock, as King Unique gives us a formidable dance floor demolisher that had them jumping around from Cable (Bedrock Benefit) to Belfast last weekend. Meticulously scored and arranged in the studio 2000000 Suns ticks all the boxes needed in a club - a great hook, multi layered syths, haunting vocals, and a beautifully infectious theme that washes over you, rising to a crescendo that envelopes the entire dance-floor.
We finish with a very nice upbeat track by Belfast's Psycatron (Phil Johnston and Paul Hamill) on Rekluse, the vinyl and digital offshoot of Fergie and Henry Von's Excentric, showcasing the work of "like minded and unconventional artists".
This weeks Guest Mix is from Luis Junior, who came to many peoples attention with one of the tracks of 2009, his remix of Baboop's "Yes We Can" which the big Dj's, particularly Sasha, hammered for a major part of last year. As well as being a popular club DJ, Luis also hosts a range of radio shows (Night power, Futura and Space of Sound).
Luis' Colache EP is out on Bedrock this Monday and showcases his eclectic production work that has hints of Alvaro Noto's work with Ryuichi Sakamoto (Insen) and Susumu Yokota's "Sakura"). With more work in the pipeline I can't wait to hear his other Bedrock tracks. One thing is for sure, Madrid is a hot-bed of creativity at the moment, with the likes of Henry Saiz raising the production bar already.
Luis Junior's mix is a real treat and not to be missed - the tracklist alone looks great, but the way it's put together and the sphere of music covered is stunning.
Both mixes are available now in your ever so reliable [ms] download section
