    Question about cable splitters.

Okay testing both Verizon DSL and Comcast Internet, problem with the DSL is that in Jersey City it is slow as balls. Comcast rocks when I have it up. Problem is that my cable modem is behind too many splitters. Called comcast they said they would install a dedicated line for free. Problem is that I have splitters from the main upstairs line feeding into all of the rooms. My big question is: "Is it illegal to have splitters that you installed yourself in your house?" The splitters don't go to other houses and I heard as long as the line is in my house they don't care. What's the deal with cable splitters?

I dont think they are illegal, in Cumberland (the snot bubble of Maryland) where I am, the Cable Guy installed Splitters at every extension of the cable coming in so that I can use it for Internet and Television. As long as it doesn't leave your house, you should be ok.

Its kinda like the grey area of using a router in your house on one cable connection

If your running more then 4-6 seperate connections total (off of all splitters combined) just go down to radio shack and buy a cable booster. Costs about $40, install it on the box where the cable comes into the house and your done.

No this is not illegal, but Comcast may try to charge you a lot more for one and then to install it. They are full of shit, do it yourself. The guy at radioshack could help you, but its something you can definetely do yourself.

No they will install a dedicated line for free so it is not like I have to pay for anything. And I dont' wanna fuck with the cable lines, it is just not my line, it is my uncle's private line running into the house too.

I had a splitter just outside of the house to split the line coming in and the cable guy told me OTR that what goes on within my house is my business and there is nothing they can do about it; but since mine was outside I could technically get in trouble for it. So, once he left I changed things up a bit and have had technicians in the house for various problems since, and they've said nothing.

Personally, I can notice the difference in my house because we have 5 cable connections and the cable modem. But its not a seperate line. Still I can notice a quality difference on 5 total connections, 4 is OK but any more then that and a booster does a hell of a job.

I'm sure you will see what I'm talking about, if you have more then 4 TVs in the house, it won't matter that the modem is on a dedicated line, you can still see interference on some of the channels, usually as you get higher in the spectrum. I have an 8 way splitter at my crib, and I noticed instantly after installing a booster, all the channels are much much more clear. No Fuzz, and no static. Worth $40 and 5 minutes to just plug it in IMO. I promise you you can't get in trouble, and anyone can do it, but you can do as you like. Just thought I would mention it.

Cool, hope then I will not have any trouble. I mean it is not like we are selling the cable ot our neighbors (not like we would anyway I just shot a squirrel in someones yard yesterday with my airsoft gun and left the thing there and boy did they get pissed). But yeah I hope they don't dick me around, thanks!

Here in L.A. one of the cable companies charges you for every splitter inside your home.

dsl IS a dedicated line.. i wonder it is so slow in your area.
you would have to split it an awful lot of times to lose that much bandwidth.

it isnt illegal to have splits in your home, or routers really. but if you have issues, they generally wont be able to help you, or wont want to, put it that way. and, yes they can tell that you have a router, if you call in for tech support.

Be careful with splitters when you are not going to amplify the incoming signal. The legs on a spltter have a # db loss listed. With a 2 way splitter its usually 3db, when you get to 4 way you lose 7. Some 4 way splitters you have 1 leg that is 3 and the remaining are 7. The cable modem needs to be on the leg with 3 db loss. OR you can use a combination of splitters where the first one is a 2 way with one leg going to the cable modem and the remaining leg going to another splitter for distribution to you tvs'.

Ran into this problem earlier this year. Didn't know I could go with the amplifier, as Civic suggested. I read somewhere that it was a bad idea, but looking into it again seems like the better option.
