It is a well known fact that when people depend on their children to support the parents in their old age, and when children die at an early age, families try to have a lot of children to hedge their bets.

If there is a good idea that most of their children will live to adulthood, and they have access to contraception, they will have fewer children. Industrialized nations reduce their populations because their lifestyles differ from an agrarian society where more children are needed to help with the farming, etc.

yes and heading into a depression would cause that to shift back to old times right? When things get worse people will have more children to work.
