    Large Hadron Collider

Large Hadron Collider with Lisa Randall of Harvard and Kyle Cranmer of NYU

to watch the interview about this thing, and if you understand what they are talking about, please help a layman understand

    The tunnel inside the collider.

After two years of delays, the Large Hadron Collider is finally up and running — and hasn't yet destroyed the universe. The 17-mile particle accelerator, based in Geneva, Switzerland, has begun smashing together subatomic particles at near-lightspeed velocities in the search for the "Higgs Boson," an elusive piece of matter also known as the "God particle." But what else will this colossal $9 billion machine do?

basically, they flick switch. beamey things smash each other in the face. Black holes are created. Our planet gets sucked in, like the proverbial golf ball and length of hose...

bottom line is - live every moment... could be gone tomorrow...

im taking up smoking again... jk

According to the harvard physicist in the interview (you obviously didn't watch pipey ) black holes are harmless because for one the ones we could create are too small to do any damage and two, they decay very quickly.

How do you tell the difference between an interesting event and a non interesting event?

The amount of data that they are dealing with is just amazing.

I know there are a few members into physics here...was hoping they could help break down the interview or description of what the function of Hadron does into understandable pieces.

the amount of information this thing collects certainly is amazing in and of itself.

WRT that interview: I'd be wary of the journalism; it seems like they are sensationalising something they don't understand fully. If you take that out and only listen to the physicists it will probably make more sense. And the woman actually seems to be giving the clearest explanations. But I'm not really a layman
