Alland Byallo - [KONTROL], Nightlight Music, Liebe*Detail, Missive Music, Dirt Crew, Utensil Recordings (San Francisco, CA)

AllanD's profile on Myspace, the place where people come to connect, discover, and share.

The SF Bay Guardian called Alland Byallo "San Francisco's very own tidal wave of techno". XLR8R Magazine dubbed him an “elegant dark lord of the dancefloor,” and all for good reason.

Alland is one of the busiest men in the San Francisco techno community. Having produced electronic music for over 10 years and DJing for nearly as long Alland has come to be an international talent, releasing original material and remixes on respected US and European record labels such as Liebe*Detail, Missive Music, Floppy Funk, Utensil Recordings and Dirtybird among many others, and headlining events all over the world. His music, a blend of old and new elements of techno, house and minimal, is regularly charted and has been licensed to CD’s released by Universal, OM Records, Proton Music and Airdrop Music.

Alland’s involvement with music didn’t just start from splurging and buying some 1200’s. Having been raised with music since the age of 5 playing piano, and adding trumpet at age 11, it only seemed natural for Alland to follow up his skills and training by sharing his taste in quality music with people as a DJ, and pursuing production. Alland is always quite busy in the studio working hard on his own unique take on electronic dance music for his own Nightlight Music imprint and many other labels.

In 2006 Alland founded ElektrUS. This private forum is made specifically to increase European interest in the American minimal techno / tech-house scene. By providing a simple, central and easy means of communication, ElektrUS streamlines the booking process and maximizes the productivity of tour booking ventures. The hope is to make the US a more fun and respectable place for the techno community, and a more profitable venture for European talent and agents. This forum was a large part of successful US techno bookings in since it‘s inception, and is set to help more in the coming years. The European sister list, EUlektrus, was founded in October of 2009.

Not only is Alland a resident, graphic designer and A&R for what is arguably the States’ most respected and notorious techno night, [KONTROL], he is also booked regularly as the opening act for influences such as Jeff Mills, Derrick May, Superpitcher, Trentemøller, Michael Mayer, Booka Shade, M.A.N.D.Y., Swayzak, Miss Kittin, Modeselektor, Claude VonStroke, Jeff Samuel, Heartthrob, Redshape, Ambivalent and many others.

Alland has quickly grown to be one of the most in-demand Dj‘s that SF has to offer. 2009 has provided two new residencies for Byallo He is now part of San Francisco’s infamous Forward underground parties and has found a home for his label’s residency, Nightlight Music at the legendary 222 Hyde club. Among many great parties, 2007 saw Alland performing live at Seattle‘s Decibel Festival and DJing at Lovefest in San Francisco. In 2008 Alland played a fantastic DJ set on the Beatport Stage at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF Movement), a DJ performance at Decibel 2008, and played a successful European tour including gigs at such world famous clubs as Panoramabar in Berlin and Propoganda Moscow. His recent tour of Europe saw him play rockin sets and building goodwill at such illustrious clubs as Harry Klein in Munich, Week End club Berlin, Uebel & Gefährlich and Kubik in Hamburg, and Cyprus' infamous Klub D. Alland has also spread his musical love as far as La Fabrique in Tokyo and the famous D-Edge club in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Byallo recently dropped his highly acclaimed debut full-length album, which received four stars from Resident Advisor. He is showing no signs of slowing down and it’s obvious that the future looks bright for both Byallo and his label, Nightlight Music.

There really is no slowing down Alland Byallo.

Brett Johnson - Classic, Cynosure, .Dotbleep, Eight Tracks (Dallas, TX)
BRETT JOHNSON's profile including the latest music, albums, songs, music videos and more updates.

With a DJ career that spans nearly 2 decades, Brett Johnson has gained the experience and musical knowledge to be considered a "DJ's DJ". Like his productions, his DJ sets are not bound by any genres. A big believer that a DJ should tell the audience a story, Brett weaves a musical journey full of hope, laughter and drama. His skill behind the turntables has allowed him to play at some of the hottest clubs and festivals in the world. Most recently, in 2009, Brett embarked on a Summer European tour that saw him playing the likes of the notorious clubs Fabric, Watergate, Cocoon and many others!

Brett has remixed high profile artists such as Mark Farina, Robbie Hardkiss, Smash TV, Soul Mechanik, Shur-I-Kan, and Iz and Diz just to name a few. His Bounce EP on Classic Recordings and his hit singles "Temptation and Lies", and "Where Are You Going?" proved that Brett is an electronic music staple not only here in Dallas, but in Texas, and across the globe. Be on the lookout for his forthcoming release on Cynosure, due in April.

Alland Byallo - Brick By Brick

For all of his talents as a producer, San Francisco and [KONTROL] resident Alland Byallo isn't normally a person whose name is mentioned when discussing the cream of deep, sophisticated dance floor-friendly sonic overlords. Brick by Brick should change that. The album is an emotive soundscape that covers most upbeat territories effortlessly.

Its title apparently refers to what Byallo calls "different stages I've passed through as a person, people I've known, places I've been, tastes I've had and changed..." This translates to the kind of deep, techy, tribal sound that has been around for a while on the West Coast. There are traces of the sounds of imprints like Siesta and Jump that made the area such a hotbed in the early 21st century and, even though they were from southern California—San Diego and San Jose respectively—they are still closer in spirit to what Byallo is doing here rather than labels like Panhandle, who tried to transplant Chicago to San Francisco.

Even though it's a very assured release, it's difficult to pick out a highlight—every track has groove in spades and will undoubtedly prove to be distinctly useful. Tracks like "Bebring" race along like Tron. "Ring in the Dead" has Byallo solemnly intoning some sort of mission statement but, like the rest of the album, it doesn't sound self-indulgent in the least. The heavy kick of "War Zero" is one of the most aggressive motifs here, but balance is provided by ethereal synth washes and a flat but potent stab. "Borderline" races headlong into the mist and gloom and has a melancholic air, while the wonderfully titled "Casual Sax" keeps the sax to a dubbed-out minimum, thus avoiding any Kenny G comparisons. "The Hello Track" stays the right side of cheese as well with a driving backing track that serves as a platform for a simple and predictable incantation.

Brick by Brick is clearly an album, not a collection of hit singles. Even so, I can see most of these tracks standing out on the dance floor as "Alland Byallo productions" due to their energy and detail. Years of being at the helm of [KONTROL] have clearly given Byallo a valuable insight into how to work the crowd. It's not always easy to transfer that knowledge to the finished product, but Brick by Brick has made it sound effortless.

          Short interview with Alland:

          Alland Byallo
Last Night a DJ Saved My Life
By Christina Li (Jun 02, 2009 ) ShareThis

          * Mix: Alland Byallo - Bear Claws

With his first full-length album about to be dropped this summer, Alland Byallo has been hard at work with his numerous global DJ gigs and renowned parties such as Bay Area’s own KONTROL. Fresh off a tour in Europe, this DJ can rock crowds with his innovative takes on techno whilst adding creative spins to house and minimal. Taking time to answer some questions from SF Station, it’s not difficult to see why the Bay Area has nothing but love for Alland.

SF Station (SFS): Are you originally from San Francisco?

Alland Byallo (AB): I'm not. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and spent a year in Toronto about 15 years ago. I've been in SF for about six years.

SFS: How did you get into DJing? How long have you been doing it?

AB: I got into DJing by just being a music nut, collecting rare and great CD's when I was younger. I started listening to a lot more electronic music, going out, and such. I heard more DJ's and downloaded more DJ sets, and finally my young broke ass dropped an entire paycheck on two used 1200's, a cheap Vestax mixer and a crate of old random vinyl. I didn't eat much for the following two weeks, but even if I had money saved, I would have probably not stopped playing with the decks long enough to eat. It's been about 10 years now.

SFS: Tell us about the history of KONTROL.

AB: KONTROL was Greg Bird's concept. He was offered a night at the former Rx Gallery, taking over for somebody who was leaving town; I believe it was Phil Sherburne. So he got Sammy D and Brian Walls involved, and Sammy called me later that day asking if I wanted a residency. It was basically some of the few kids in town that play techy and or minimal stuff since the first wave of laptop minimalists like Kit Clayton, Sutekh and Twerk toned down their gigging to focus on other things.

Our first night was a great success. Gallopierende Zuversicht, an incredible Swiss live act, were our first guests. There were very few techno events at the time, and I guess SF was ready for something like this because the night blew the hell up. We had a line down the block and squeezed as many techno-lovers as we could into that spot. We lost and gained some members along the way, Craig Kuna and Nikola Baytala joined us down the line, our crowds seemed to get bigger and bigger and we finally moved to The Endup. And here we are a little while later... four years deep. 48 shows, plus our satellite underground and club events... it's been an awesome journey.

SFS: Four years! That's quite a feat. Any good stories you would like to share?

AB: On a good night at the Rx shows, the whole place smelled like fried chicken. The liquor store next door served some damn fine breaded bird. I kinda miss that smell, honestly. Our parties have almost always gone fairly smooth, outside of the usual trials and tribs that come with working with close friends. I wish I had more hijinx to retell. I'm sure once this is published I'll think of something and curse myself for not retelling it!

SFS: What is your favorite type of music to play?

AB: I play somewhere between techno and deep house. My sets usually have the drive of techno, but the moods and sounds of house. Lots of organic elements, but the whole affair is usually very drummy, and builds from one style to another. I can never play a whole set of just one style. Occasionally I'll get in a harder techno mood and play some darkness. Gotta work it out sometimes!

SFS: What inspires you to keep on making innovative music?

AB: What else is there to do? Everything inspires me. My friends and family, the world around me. If I'm not here to say something unique then why am I here? I have a chance to make some noise, so I'm making lots of them... then arrange and mix them!

SFS: How has it been putting together your first full-length album?

AB: It's been incredible. Lots and lots of work; time and money spent to no end, but it's such a nice feeling to know I'm working on this solid piece of work. There are a lot of varied elements joined together by one theme, rather than just spitting out singles and remixes, as I have for so long. There's a lot of second guessing, but I try to keep it raw and from the gut, not over-thinking as much as possible. At first, I wanted to make something more conceptual, but decided to just take it to a more reflective yet DJ-friendly place. There will be time for artsy fartsy down the road. I didn't think it appropriate for a summer release.

SFS: With your fantastic musical taste, who are some of your personal favorite DJs?

AB: SF's own Nikola Baytala and Clint Stewart are my favorite DJs, hands down. Ben Sims, Luciano, Dixon, Doc Martin, Cassy, Dan Curtin, Radio Slave, Seth Troxler, and Derek Plaslaiko are all heroes of mine. I have a new favorite, and that's Julietta, the Harry Klein resident in Munich. She played such a wonderful set before my live set at that club, after which we tagged one record each for like three plus hours!! It was an honor and a blast! Eurokai from Liebe*Detail impressed me to no end while I was in Hamburg. Don't miss a chance to hear him play. Closer to home I really love to hear Mossmoss and Christian Mora play. Those guys are something special!

SFS: Any dream collaborations for you?

          AB: Alland Byallo and Enya.

SFS: What is your favorite thing about San Francisco?

AB: I can't pick just one thing. Having been on tour for the last month, I've realized I most miss my girl, my friends, the weather, Dolores Park, PPQ off 19th, Bi-Rite, Thai House Express on Geary, The Endup and our incredible dance music community as a whole.

Check out what this DJ is up to at http://www.allandbyallo.com/music.html and be sure to keep ears perked for his much anticipated CD dropping in July! Catch him this weekend at KONTROL’s anniversary party, and get yourself geared up at http://www.myspace.com/alland.
