Another top notch ‘Transitions’ this week - the overall quality of which has been relentless so far this year carrying on seamlessly from 2009’s superb vintage.
John’s segment of the T294 works fantastically well as an hour mix on its own, while showcasing the very best in new electronic productions. Starting of very low key and then building via some nice vocals until Diggers hits you hard with the real peak time stuff ... definitely a Transitions that deserves to be cranked up loud.
Uto Karem gets things underway and is already making a name for himself having created Agile Recordings after two years studying Audio Engineering. One of Italy’s rising stars, Karem’s productions already receiving plays from the likes of Dubfire, Richie Hawtin, John Acquaviva, Chris Liebing and now Diggers following a debut release for Plus 8.
‘Maschine Love’ is a clever piece of minimal tech house, with a punchy percussion and rhythm structure led by a nice kick drum, crisp hi-hat and rounded bass-line sitting alongside an onslaught of sound effects, edits and studio trickery. ‘Maschine Love’ has been described as a ‘playground for the cerebral cortex’ and begs for a decent sound system to capture all the unexpected pitch shifts, quirky samples and micro-edits that drive the groove.
Next up is a true stand out artist in today's fast paced electronic world. Tel Aviv sound architect Chaim Avital (Supplement | Facts Cocoon | Traum Schallplatten | MBF) is now exclusively signed to Berlin heavyweight imprint Bpitch Control. Chaim’s recent acclaimed output showcases that his powerful individual productions are some of the highest quality club tracks around. Fusing solid bass heavy grooves, clearly inspired by his love for those classic jacking Chicago jams, hypnotic synth hooks, trade mark effected percussion, live instrumentation and vocal snippets, Chaim's unique and organic sound always makes an impact. underpinned by top-class studio knowhow, his crisp, forward thinking records are a joy to drop in front of even the biggest crowds.
On the remix front there are chart topping remixes like 'very wrong' and 'smile for me' and high-profile re-workings for the likes of Ellen Allien. On the DJ’ing front the enigmatic Israeli has graced dj booths from fabric & panorama bar and joins Bpitch on their 10 year anniversary tour.
After a wave of stunning releases Chaim returns with a track Diggers likes so much we get the vocal and dub. ‘Love Rehab’ spoils us with those trademark Chaim elements - tricky percussion, multi-layered atmospherics treading the fine line between tension and melodic release, with some fine soulful vocals from house and pop singer Meital de Razon, plus a background funk-injected organ riff and slight tinge of the Moroccan roots that were an early influence .
Contrasting to the soulful original, the ‘Dub’ embraces a hypnotic house beat for more of a typical Digweed ‘heads down’ dark destroyer of a track, with added atmospheric elements, layered synths and dub-delayed vocal fragments for a very very cool piece of music.
The pace picks up a notch with Belfast's Phil Kieran, who has been putting out highly thought of releases for over a decade on labels like Skint, Soma and NovaMute as well as breaking into movie scoring, creating the soundtrack for Steven Soderbergh’s ‘The Girlfriend Experience’ with compatriot David Holmes.
Kieran recently hooked up with Cocoon for artist album debut ‘Shh’ which referenced a love of sound formulated in a fresh and futuristic way fusing elements of from dub reggae to hip-hop and early 90s electronica (Autechre/Black Dog) alongside the futuristic techno that Phil excels in.
‘Shh’ contains live drums, some electric/acoustic/bass guitar and live keyboard playing as well as some choice guest vocalists. “I tried to use all my knowledge from when I first got into music to try and make an album that captures everything I’ve ever loved about music”. Phil has synthesized his myriad of influences into one radically beautiful whole: blissed-out vocal samples, space age electro, cavernous bleeps, fizzy technoid 4/4 beats, glistening glitches, crackers crackles, early R&S sounds, warm keys, acerbic bassline undertows, dense echoes, Orbital cinematics and randy robotics all feature, but really this is an album far greater than the sum of its parts. It’s very much a home or car listening album, perfect for post-club play, although plenty of the individual tracks contain discerning dancefloor dynamics too.
Tailoring things for the dance-floor, Cocoon are putting out a batch of six remixes from ‘Shh’ calling on the likes of Pan-Pot and Edgbert. Here Diggers plays the Patrick Kunkel remix, which a real main room track that evokes memories of late 90’s prog, with a driving (at times banging) beat, sustained synths and lush background vocals.
There’s something sinister brewing near the town of Marseilles as Julian Jeweil returns to the show with another dark techno stormer that’s likely to destroy the main rooms of Space (Carl Cox’s Revolution) and Amnesia (Cocoon) in Ibiza this summer. Influenced by the cities subterranean club scene Jeweil’s ‘Babou’ EP for Plus 8 features four diverse and remarkably unique tracks covering the many facets of modern electronic music. Each track produced with perfect floor rocking sensibilities and an apparent focus on bringing unique perspectives and pushing the limits of clever music making.
After bringing us the non-shrinking violet that was ‘Soho’ on T289 title cut ‘Babou’ is nothing short of absolute peak time intensity. A blistering synth hook dominates the track while a steady bass surge and pounding groove ride perfectly alongside, demonstrating how Jeweil creates tension as the track gains momentum. As the beats continue and you get deeper into it, the melodies come into focus.
The peak time vibe continues via Marco Bailey, who has been on fire of late. After releases on Carl Cox’s ‘Intec’ and his own ‘MB Elektronics’ Marco returns to Bedrock with regular partner in crime Tom Hades for another techno stormer in ‘Funky Business’ on John’s digital imprint. Secret Cinema presents his first EP on Gem. This powerful package includes the melodic anthem ‘Glad Chord’ which builds and builds tension with its repetitive synth jabs and unfolds into pure euphoria before diving back into the groove. Unsurprisingly you can see this one being huge live, and John has been playing the Psycatron mix of late which has added strings and a more varied sequence giving the track an extra dance floor friendliness – all being well this will be aired in the coming weeks.
The relentless quality continues with Ian O’Donovan and a stellar release for Hype Muzik. Influenced by artists like as Steve Rachmad, Underground Resistance, Technasia and DJs Garnier, Mills and Hell, Ian has branched from Dj’ing to production, determined to help break the cycle of the soulless “minimal” fad that had at times threatened to dominate the scene. If the euphoric monster ‘Anabatic’ is anything to go by, Ian’s on an exciting path (which includes a forthcoming release for Bedrock).
Another label on consistently fine form is Buzzin’ Fly. Launched in 2003, Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly Records is a small London-based label specializing in deep House and deep Techno. It has fostered the careers of young artists and producer-DJs such as Justin Martin, Manoo & Francois A, Spencer Parker and Mademoiselle Caro & Franck Garcia, and is home to Watt's own club productions ('Lone Cat', 'Pop A Cap In Yo' Ass' with Estelle, 'Guinea Pig'). It has drawn defining work from international remixers such as Ame, Radio Slave, Charles Webster, Michel Cleis and John Tejada and was voted Best Breakthrough Label, House Music Awards 2004, and twice Best British Label Runner-up, DJ Magazine Awards 2007 & 2008.

Music aficionado, Physics degree holder and Phela label owner Pete ‘Stylus Trouble’Heller remains one of dance musicıs most influential producers out there with work ranging from major collaborations with Terry Farley to his own key productions. His studio wizardry is much sought after, with has provided the opportunity to remix the likes of Faithless, Fatboy Slim, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, Jamiroquai and Moby, to name but a few. John plays the ‘dub’ of Pete’s latest which represents a journey into a deeper, more soulful place. Having played ‘Overtime’ out live Ben Watt liked it so much, he signed it up.
Not one to be left behind Diggers has signed up Heller’s ‘NuAcid’ which is inspired by the Chicago originators and follows on from 2009’s ‘Sabotage’ [BED78] – ‘NuAcid’ comes out at end of April on Bedrock (which also has a forthcoming EP from Quivver !!!).

One of the unsung heroes of the UK house music scene, James Talk has gone from a fledgling producer and DJ championed by Pete Tong to a global star, gracing the world’s most respected labels and clubs on a regular basis.
The 27-year-old Southampton talent has been DJing half his life, and over the last 7 years has carved a name for himself in the production world as one the most talented groove-makers around. Whether it’s the straight-up, chunky acid and tech house sound that he’s best known for, or the flashes of anthemic genius in his tracks with Ridney (Sunshyne and their Pet Shop Boys-approved rework of West End Girls both chosen as Tong’s Essential New Tunes), his productions are always filled with colour, character, and funk.
Having graced world-leading labels like Get Physical, CR2, Bedrock, Noir, Saved and fabric in recent years, he’s kicked off the new decade in sterling form with his stomping, peak-time remix of M.A.N.D.Y. vs Booka Shade’s Donut – with the latter loving his version so much that they’ve asked him to remix their stone-cold classic Manderine Girl. In addition, he’s got releases coming up throughout 2010 on acclaimed labels like Blu-Fin, Great Stuff Recordings and Global Underground.
After playing many of the world’s most revered clubs over the last two years – including Tokyo’s Womb, Chicago’s Spy Bar, London’s Ministry Of Sound, Manchester’s Sankeys and Toronto’s Footwork – he’ll be continuing to tour the globe extensively throughout 2010, with many more exciting plans afoot for the year. His successful Radio 1 Essential Mix from September 2009 will be followed on by a third guest mix for John Digweed’s Transitions show.
In an age when the continental European sound dominates the house and Techno scene, James Talk remains one of the UK’s brightest talents, reminding the world where tech house came from in the first place. A breath of fresh air from the droves of posturing scenesters and minimal chinstrokers, his is a sound which goes back to the visceral essentials.
