Clash Music - ClashMusic Dj Mix Podcast - Production Unit

    Bonus mix from Glaswegian maestro

This week, you lucky sods are endowed with not one but two cracking exclusive DJ mixes with which to excite and refresh your tired ear canals. Don’t say we never give you nothing, etc… Check out today's other mix from Ellen Allien HERE.

Mix number two comes from the obscenely capable Production Unit, aka Dave Donnelly. Formerly one third of innovative electronica act The Marcia Blaine School For Girls, as well as a part of the much-lauded Scottish party crew and now record label, Numbers. Production Unit’s Clash mix, entitled ‘The First Door’, explores a huge range of bases, featuring the likes of Breakage, Ital Tek, Aphex Twin and Roska, along with a host of other electronic talent.

But being a more than capable wordsmith himself, as well as producer and DJ, it seems only right to allow Production Unit an opportunity to wax lyrical about the seamless audio beast of his own creation: “For this mix, extensive use was made of the original interview with Rickie Lee Jones that The Orb sampled to great effect on ‘Little Fluffy Clouds’. Spanning downtempo ambience through to ruff bassweight, it showcases the myriad elements that make up the Production Unit sound.”

Dave has also just released a rather fine EP, ‘Ghost Tracks’ (available HERE) which – like his Clash mix – embraces stylish minimal dub and innovative soundscaped textures, bumped up with a wide-ranging cacophony of bass backbones and complex rhythmic onslaughts. Investigate or be damned.

There is also, as Dave explains, a strong relationship between the vibe of the mix and the: “I wanted to illustrate the broad church that makes up the sound of ‘Ghost Tracks’ – dubstep, certainly, but there are strong techno elements and more purely electronic influences too.Lots of use of space, but a sense of coiled energy as well, and some wiggle where you need it.”

And if you like what you hear – and y’oughta – have a gander HERE for some more Production Unit mixed goodness. Dave also tells Clash that he has a second follow-up mix planned. If it’s anything like this’un, I can’t bloody wait.
