    Transitions (Episode 302) June 13th 2010 w/ Ian O'Donovan

    Transition 302

Another fine dark heads down set, with new releases on Natura Sonoris, H-Productions & Cocoon plus a Bedrock future classic.

T302 gets underway with Henry Saiz’s excellent and heavily under-rated Natura Sonoris imprint. Based in Switzerland, via Vietnam, Van Hai has diverse artistic interests from video, plastic and graphic art to writing and photography. His compositions are aimed at the attentive listener, embracing a large electronic spectrum and acoustic samples, giving his tracks their own unique style and fingerprint.

After 2009's Antechambre EP Hai returns with his first album 'Intimacy' + projects for Factor City (Spain) Petit Monstre (Mexico), Perspectiv (Switzerland) and Kina Music (Italy).

Intimacy is now followed by 'Aparté' (the Intimacy Remixes Collection) featuring Ripperton, 7th Key, David Durango, Sinner DC and Cosmic Cowboys - the latter turn in an eclectic deep spaced out tech house complete with strings.

The tech vibe continues with Berlin's Pierre Deutschmann on friend Lützenkirchen's 'Platform B' before we get another big track from John’s record box - 'Valentine’s & 909’s' is a real club track with an infectious ice cool groove and retro handclaps that really gets things moving. Massive on Diggers superb 2010 Essential Mix.

It’s great to see new labels like Amsterdam based ‘Bitten‘ emerging. Five releases in and the roster has already featured releases/remixes from DJ Madskills, Anton Pieete, Paul Ritch + Doomwork & Neuroxyde. Here they turn to a producer with an enviable run of form - fresh from his stunning remix of Lusine's 'Two Dots' & EDM chart topping 'Feed The Freezer' for Joris's Rejected, Nic Fanciulli delivers a summer terrace stormer with a classic soulful house vocal.

After the break Chris '40oz' Fortier returns with a heads down remix of Juspio’s ‘Frozen Light’ that also featured on Diggers’ recent Essential Mix before a great track from Stɔckhɔlm-based Techno sound architect Cari Lekebusch, whose H-Production's has cultivated a reputation over the last two decades for consistently delivering cutting edge material across a diverse range of styles.

Taken from the first of two EP's which will preview his forthcoming 'State Of The Art' album the dark & eerie ‘Macabre’ is a Main Room Techno workout par excellence that combines the primal chest-thumping dynamism of a booming bassline and jack-hammer kick alongside more cerebral moments of melody.

Next up is rising Scottish artist Gary Beck, who came to our attention with ‘Consumed’ for M_nus - his latest release ‘Say What’ for Fanciulli's Saved is a deep, grooving tech house monster.

Originally released in the early 90' on New York's legendary Sex Trax label, 'Deep Down Inside' become a blueprint track of the Chicago House sound. Without having lost any of its energy and appeal Reboot step in for remix duties on Cocoon.

Back in the day, at the beginning of the Nineties of the last century, house music was firmly in the hands of U.S. metropolises New York, Detroit and Chicago. One of the most influential labels during that time was the Power Music branch 'Sex Trax', where the unforgettable "Can You Dig It?" by Mark The 909 King was released in 1994 as the first record of the new label.

It was in the same year when Felix da Housecat’s buddy Harrison Crump debuted with "Deep Down Inside", an almost ideal blueprint of the Chicago House sound with rather indecent lyrics, Sex Trax in the true sense of the word.

That Chicago sound is still fascinating now - revamped for 2010, Frankfurt-based Frank Heinrich aka Reboot privides a 10-minute-long interpretation of "Deep Down Inside" is strongly focused on percussive tribal sounds. Diggers only plays a snipit - I strongly recommend you check out the longer version.

We end with one of THE biggest tunes of 2010 so far via Bedrock’s latest signing out of Dublin, Ian O’Donovan - who also provides this weeks stellar guest mix. On a quest to bring the big big tracks back to Clubland and having given us 'Horizons' last week, the a-side of O'Donovans Bedrock EP is the intoxicating and beautiful celestial themed ‘Aurora Borealis’ - set to be massive this summer after going down a storm on dance-floors worldwide from Global Gathering (Poland] to Sankeys. The huge beats, lush synth, intricate compositional layers, big breakdown & euphoric hook are simply breathtaking. A future Bedrock classic.

    Ian O'Donovan Bio

    http://soundcloud.com/ian-odonovan
    http://www.myspace.com/ianodonovanmusic

After spending many of his earlier years listening to various styles and genres, Ian came across the world of underground electronic music. He quickly began to immerse himself in this music and the scene itself. Ian began djing playing house, techno and electro and although his palette has widened over the years, his dj sets are still largely filled with these genres of music.

It wasn’t until he moved to Australia in the mid 00’s that he began to create his own tracks, teaching himself production techniques and developing his sound. After returning to Ireland in 2009, he decided to focus more of his attention on making music seriously.

Ian began sending out some new tracks and immediately caught the attention of Laurent Garnier, who’s support looks set to help him make a big impression on the dance music scene, with a slew of ep’s coming this year on a number of labels. His tracks have already been played by several big name djs, to rave reviews and all this before having even one release. His style is most often described as Detroit techno and you will always find his tracks rich in melody, an element which is often lacking in modern day techno.

With current & forthcoming releases on Hype Muzik, Flying Flowers Records and John Digweed’s Bedrock Records, Ian is one to watch for the future!

Coming to a Central London venue in October

This release was mastered direct from vinyl at the request of the DJ and as such features natural sound characteristics of this medium such as record surface noise.

Melodic mixer O'Donovan ain't. Some of the mixes made me cringe.

Great tunes though and Digweed's mix is again spectacular.

Yeah, aside from the mixing, the O'D mix is properly fresh. Muchly enjoyed.
