    Bye-bye trolls?

Bye-bye trolls? Blizzard forums to use real names
    BARBARA ORTUTAY
    From Associated Press
    July 07, 2010 2:49 PM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) — Activision Blizzard Inc.'s move to require people to use their real names if they want to post messages in online forums for games is the latest sign that online anonymity is falling out of favor with many companies.

The upcoming change has upset many gamers who prize anonymity and don't necessarily want their gamer personas associated with their real identities.

Blizzard, the maker of "World of Warcraft," said Tuesday that the new rule will go into effect later this month. It will apply first to forums about the highly anticipated "StarCraft II," out July 27; other games are to follow.

Blizzard hopes that making people use their real names will cut down on nasty behavior in the forums and create a more positive environment. Players will have the option — but not a requirement — to display the name of their main game character alongside their real name.

Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, said Blizzard is the latest company to require real identities. But he added businesses have "a lot of freedom" in doing so.

Facebook, the world's most popular online social network, asks users to sign up with their real names. The company tries to delete fake profiles it comes across. A growing number of blogs and news sites are also abandoning anonymity. The Buffalo News said last month it will start requiring commenters on its website to give their real names and the towns they live in, just as they would do in a printed letter to the editor.

Online games are among the last truly anonymous frontiers. As such, Rotenberg called Blizzard's decision a "bit of a sad day" in the world of gaming.

"Part of the fun of the online gaming would was the sense that you could construct a character different form who you were in the real world," he said.

"World of Warcraft" has more than 11.5 million subscribers who pay monthly fees to play the game worldwide.

How exactly is using real names going to stop trolling? So someone uses their real name on a message board and upsets someone, so then the upset person go’s all Terminator and starts hunting down and killing everyone with the same name

Maybe we should do this here as well. Or maybe not. So now trolls don't have names like ruL0r2043 anymore but call themselves John Doe or use other names they made up? Great improvement.

                  Re: Bye-bye trolls?

                  certainly not bye bye.

trolling is rather lame nowadays; and complete with blowhards actually trolling themselves. played sc2 with azn; wc3 where trolling really took hold, and wow on blackrock with lod, ftw, vof, and fun and games; and posted on failchan from late 03 to 04, so i can say i've seen a stark contrast to what these places are like now. most these groups and anon are covers, and i think few here actually know who some of them really are/were, and what they belong too. roots going back before the massive sweep and successful witch hunt of phreaks etc. in the late 90s. but all that has changed.

blizzard isn't stupid, and this is just an initial move, i heard. the forums over there are nothing compared to most forums, really. blizz. wow forum's are full of jerks, kiddies, and lameness... which is ruining it like other large scale places. you could impliment it here, but would be uneccessary - as this community, fundamentally, should really be just about music and having fun chatting with fellow heads with a real common interest. the fun and trolling here is harmless i think.

i remember when trolling originally was all about getting others to think outside the box and not to take things really all too serious on the net. wouldn't mind [ms] doing it, but really? cmon man haha

yeah, i did, but i don't think it would work now homie

besides, i only play games sparingly and for recreation nowadays; i wouldn't be competent to keep up with the gamer jargon. plus, i've developed computer vision syndrome, which really blows, so i'm glad i've focused by career and energy other places
