    Transitions (Episode 307) July 18th 2010 w/ Santos

    Transition 307

This weeks there's an insight into the latest major productions rocking Digweed's world, with two very fine starters before we hit a deep techno groove, ending with a new version of an old obscure classic. This mix demands to be turned up LOUD !

There's an eclectic opening to the show as NYC's Adultnapper, the shadowy figure drawn from the dark reaches of Francis Harris's imagination, delivers a typically haunting EP for the darker side of the dance-floor. Harris, a philosophy PhD drop-out with punk rocker roots, has been establishing himself as an underground DJ/Producer with a unique sound.

Adultnapper's 'Slowly EP' is a typically spooked out two tracker from the East Coast's master of the dark textural soundscapes. On the flipside the mysterious 'Gold and Forgetting' has a floating tripped out Chicago-esque synth theme at its tender heart, supported by a swathe of emotional strings.

The contemporary start continues with a fine brooding down-tempo remix of Trip-Hop Bristolians Portishead & 'Roads' from their 1994 debut, with that iconic Rhodes piano theme underpinned by edgy fed-back guitar that always seems to stay just within control.

Max Cooper is starting to make a name for himself. His early roots DJ'ing in his native Belfast evolved into a residency at Firefly as Max persued his PhD in scientific studies before setttling in London for his music & research into mathematical modelling on the evolution of networks of genes and a sci-art project combining evolutionary & music production algorithms. This keen mind is reflected in his diverse productions, marking Max out as one of a rare breed of Uk producers making the transition across to Germany through Cologne-based minimal techno record imprint Traum Schallplatten via his acclaimed Harmonisch/Symphonica/Stochastisch Serie/Chaotisch EP's. Citing his influences as Max Richter, Philip Glass, Jon Hopkins, Ulrich Schnaus, Helios, Stephan Bodzin & Nathan Fake, Max has remixed a diverse range of music from Hot Chip to Minilogue to Michael Nyman as well as stablemates Applescal and Dominik Eulberg.

Cooper's unofficial remix of Portishead provides an insight of Max's ability to rework music - this doesn't have an official release planned & was simply a labour of love because 'the original is such a great track and one I thought would suite a conversion'.

Although you can grab a copy via 'indieshuffle':

Also forthcoming from Max is this massive track:

The pace picks up via Hamburg based 'Ideal Audio' who may be one of the smaller players on Germany's electronic scene, but that doesn't stop them producing big records from the likes of Oliver Huntemann, Dubfire and Extrawelt. Here André Winter & Hatzler hit us with some serious techno before this weeks guest Santos returns to Saved with tech-house stormer "Yato Ma". The deep driving rhythms/percussion and twisted vocals make this is a real club track.

Techno innovators Slam have had a stunningly consistent year & packed schedule, with yet another new release from their Paragraph imprint. Slam classic 'We Doin’ This Again' is remixed by Netherlands-based Parisian Julien Chaptal, fresh from solid releases on the excellent Remote Area. Chaptal produces a brilliant ‘One More Time’ remix, continuing his outstanding form with a fine tech-house interpretation full of heavy bass & bouncy synths jockeying for position followed by a timely drop of a grooving vocal loop - all complimented by skilful percussion.

Gem is Secret Cinema’s recently established label, and the owner calls on Egbert for support with a fierce dirty techno banger that opens rather minimal ... then turns into a rocking synth-blaster with great bass work.

Adam Beyer's revived Drumcode label has been releasing chunky beats over the past few months from the likes of Alan Fitzpatrick, Ben Sims & Slam. Spin off label 'Mad Eye' provides an alternative outlet for the Swedish producer. 'Loose Turn' is a heavy kick-driven piece of techno supported by staccato percussion and almost industrial-like bass.

Next up there's more main room techno from Mauro Picotto's Go EP (Reset Robot's Zeitwerk Remix featured on T305 a couple of weeks back) and his bass infected sound.

We end with a corker :

NYC powerhouse Abe Duque helps dust off the plates of Marmions inimitable classic 'Schöneberg' (the original hit us for the first time in 1993 on Superstition records) - now we're graced with a new 12incher also featuring remixes by DJ Hell and Donnacha Costello.

Duque hands in a tough remix with a healthy nod to those old-school acid days with a pumping low filtered bass groove before a second wave of bass pressure hits you for a vintage percussive dance-floor workout. Great stuff indeed !
