    Transitions (Episode 310) August 10th 2010 w/ Dimitri Nakov

    Transition 310

This week Transitions hosts another range of fine electronica covering the very best in new music out there, all encapsulated in another seamless mix from John Digweed. Labels featured incl. Supplement facts, M_nus, Kompact, Systematic, Ovum & Bedrock Digital.

We start with 2 tracks on Supplement Facts which has really taken off since 2007, really established itself a dependable but contemporary label with a clear visual identity & consistently great roster of releases with a commitment to unearthing & promoting global talent, while also being a springboard for label boss Guy Gerber's fine & challenging productions.

Supplement Facts fine form continues as David Kemoun returns post 2008's 'Jaffa Cake EP' [SFR010] with & Varoslav as the Parisian duo turn in an elegantly twisted cut with a trippy main riff supported by an array of drums & wonky acapella. If you like this check out 'Mayann' [Cocoon Recordings COR12"032]. Next Berlin's Dave Ellesmere & his brooding SFR debut 'Always Love' hits us with crashing hi-hats as he works his way through the frequencies, supported by lush chord-swells and tech-infused tone underpinning the soulful deep house theme.

John unleashes one of Ovum head Josh Wink's 'Weekend Weapons' as Livio & Roby re-work Steve Lawler’s 2008 'Femme Fatale' [Ovum Recordings OVM192] : this has been doing the damage live... take it away Josh !

"The original release on Ovum was a welcome turn in our catalog and Steve’s diverse production. This mix was completed by Romanians Livio & Roby; it saw the light of day when they gave it to me at a gig in Bucharest. Wow. It has been a secret gem of mine and is just the right combination of their signature hypnotic, percussive tech funk and Steve’s original synth-laden melodies. We talked with Steve and Livio & Roby and we all decided that it must come out. People have been pestering me for it for over a year now."

Last spotted on Joris Voorn's Balance with R U OK Kevin McHugh's alter-ego 'Ambivalent' returns on Richie Hawtin's M_nus, showcasing the usual impeccable & cutting edge techno alongside a typically futuristic & warped vocal.

With releases on some of the biggest techno labels of our time [Cocoon | International Gigolo | R&S] Belgian duo Mugwump return to Kompact fusing groove-based aesthetics and modern techno leanings as E40 Blues delivers a fine groove resplendent in analogue old school charm, floor-friendly synth pads & deep house beats.

Next we go deep into tech house territory with a real T310 highlight as Systematic impresario Marc Romboy collaborates with Detroit techno don Blake Baxter to celebrate his label's 70th release. The resultant 'Muzik' EP is house music in its purest form, but with a contemporary edge - here the title cut features an array of synths, soft claps and drum patterns which are complemented by a cool spoken vocal about 'that feel good, underground music from back in the day, that makes you reminisce'. Musik has a real purity & all the key elements to be a (Pioneer) Record Box staple for Diggers live.

Aussie's Projekt Inertia - mix tech & progressive house with indie inspired melodies to create a unique sound they call 'Indietronica' focusing on melodic and driving sound-scapes. On Ian O'Donovan continues his outstanding form placing his own stamp on 'Bangkok' and taking things into the main room.

Next Sian [Poker Flat|Sci+Tec|Soma|Dessous] adds Bedrock Digital to his impressive label CV. The label has, as John says, been 'firing on all cylinders' with the imprints EDM profile & relentless quality of releases marking yet another highpoint in an illustrious history - Bedrock, right now, it simply at the top of its game.

Cue Sian's new EP, building on his stellar 'Dreams Are Maps', which formed a key element of John's Structures CD2 as Diggers captured that unique musical vortex. Here we are treated to a further 'Treasure Mix' as Sian showcases the same ear for a relentless dark destroyer that he used to great effect on Guy J's 'Ballroom'.

We close with a sneak preview of a track forthcoming on Charlie May's new 'Mayhem' label which focuses on the tougher side of his sound in addition to that unique mercurial sound that has graced so many fine productions. Look out for Charlie May & Barry Jamieson - Home Coming (Inc Sasha Remix) [MayhemMAY002] coming soon and massive of late for Sasha.

    Dimitri Nakov Bio

    http://www.dimitrinakov.com

Moving to Brazil in 2000 after a few good years in the UK dance scene, and after a handful of unique experiences working and DJ'ing with Sasha, running Narcotic Records (Roger Sanchez's UK based label) and promoting artists such as Robert Miles, during the "Children" heyday, once in Brazil Dimitri inevitably became an integral part of the burgeoning electronic music scene based out of Sao Paulo, today one of the globes biggest dance music scenes.

Often headlining events of 10-20,000 people in Brazil, Mexico and Japan, (at Creamfields 2009, Brazil Dimitri hosted a Dimitri & Friends arena) while in Japan Dimitri plays alongside Fat Boy Slim, Chemical Borthers, Sasha, Layo & Bushwacka and Luciano, to name a few. Always keen to keep it real Dimitri often participates in smaller, more intimate gigs like D.Edge, De Putamadre, Warung and Womb, all regarded as amongst the world's best clubs.

Back in Europe at present Dimitri has become a regular guest on David Moreno's Ibiza Dance radio show on Ibiza Global Radio (97.6 FM in Spain and streamed) while also achieving an unofficial residency with Sasha last year at Cream at Amnesia (Ibiza), and keeping active internationally with gigs at Sonar and The Glade Festival, Boom Festival and Big Beach, and tours in Mexico, Brazil and Japan.
Dimitri's latest musical manifests, remixes of "Park it in the shade" and "Coma" by Sasha and "Move!" by Smith & Selway were Beatport successes while his latest single is a collaboration with King Roc, album of the year winning artist (DJ Mag), entitled "Sao Paolo Nights", released in April on Bedrock Records.

Forthcoming releases include an exclusive collaboration with Sasha, and a handful of singles and remixes to be released during 2010.
