VGA to HDMI converter: anyone here use one?

I have an old laptop that I want to stream netflix through onto my tv. unfortunately the tv does not have a vga port, only 2 hdmi's and so forth. At any rate, my computer only has a vga, but not hdmi. So my only solution is to get a vga-to-hdmi converter.

Anyone here use one? if so, would you recommend it?

Also looking for alternatives to this (i hear the Wii now offers some ability to stream netflix now....might consider buying this and getting the added bonus of a Wii...)

it'll work fine but why would you want to do it? Unless your laptop is the only machine at home you can connect to a TV, I wouldn't recommend doing it.

because otherwise I'd have nothing else to connect to the tv. I've got a cheap ass dvd player with an hdmi-out that would work, but if I'm going to stream netflix, I'm going to need some way to connect the laptop to the tv. na' mean?

wtf...120$ for a vga to hdmi adapter? there is a 15 foot dvi to hdmi cable here for 12$

I'm suprised there isn't any VGA to HDMI though Maybe because its analog? Is there not a dumb box that can do this for cheap?

Re: VGA to HDMI converter: anyone here use one?

I've heard GREAT reports about it working very well with Ubuntu / XMBC but moderate reports about Windows 7 / 1080p. Most people have had to overclock the bloody thing in order to get it to work well. I don't particularly see a problem with that, it just ruins the life of the CPU and I'd rather run it clock.

Only problem with Ubuntu is that the USB / Infrared remote doesn't work too well and it's unable to put the device into sleep mode (or wake up from it). Which means you would need to have a keyboard / mouse handy for shutdowns / start ups. Do you have this issue rez?

Re: VGA to HDMI converter: anyone here use one?

I haven't done any overclocking at all with mine running on ubuntu and it has played every movie i've thrown at it in 1080p w/o any lag at all. i think also that i played with getting it to sleep when i first bought it and i was able to get it to sleep w/o any problems and wake up. i honestly leave mine on all the time since it makes no noise and uses hardly any power

i use that dinovo mini bluetooth remote, but i dont like it very much. so i have that sitting on my coffee table, no attached keyboard or mouse.

since you like your itouch so much, i think you should get this:

it is the xbmc remote for the itouch/phone. you can view your entire library on the phone screen and scroll thru it, and it talks to the xbmc box thru your home wifi. it looks really cool.

also this script below will install xbmc on your ubuntu box for you really easily, i haven't used it but a guy from work said it was simple.

Download XBMC Complete Installer for free. XBMC Complete installer is a Linux automated installer for XBMC on top of minimal Ubuntu install. It aims to provide quality and complete support for installing & configuring for ION platforms/others.

holy shitters robin, you've just made it slightly easier for me to consider going the Ubuntu route. Yea on Ubuntu, I've read excellent reports about 1080p playback with NO lag, even at the default 1.6 ghz clock rate. I might have to (seriously) give that a go when I get it (along with my iTouch). Did you enable video hardware acceleration too? Was it easy? Also did you install Ubuntu on the device from a USB key?
