    Transitions (Episode 313) August 28th 2010 w/ Nick Curly

    Transition 313

Transitions 313 is banging ! With a tough techno edge you'd better approach this one with extreme caution - but I do suggest you turn things up LOUD.

No messing about this week as Diggers ventures straight into tough techno territory via a couple of new releases on Adam Beyer's fine Drumcode imprint. Firstly those Glaswegian masters of mayhem Slam (Orde Meikle and Stuart McMillan) moonlight from Soma with the heads down edginess of 'Souvenir' with some very nice percussion driving things along.

Next Stockholm-based Nihad Tule gives us more of a stripped down slow burner, with drums & metallic sounds creating a moody groove as the intensity builds – equally as brutal as Slam but in a more understated fashion.

After some great releases & remixes for Bedrock & Get Physical (his remix of Tone Depth's classic ‘Rumblefish’ saw him sit pretty at the top of the Techno charts for a full two and half months) Stereo (Montreal] resident Maher Daniel now debuts for Joris Voorns' en vogue Rejected with a terrace friendly house track full of piano stabs & deep bass encouraging some serious dance-floor action with the occasional big 'hands in the air' moment (well it is still summer after all).

Mutant Clan return fresh from rocking the SW4 Bedrock Arena with a tribal-tech remix of Berlin production collective Rhythm Monks. ‘Primal Beat’ embraces the tribal origins of music where rhythm was playing a basic part of life, and is based on rhythms popular in the Siguiri, Kankan & Kouroussa regions in Africa which is used during disputes among the men of the villages. This is definitely one to get moving as the Clan add an underground edge to things and create a banging monster to get the room moving.

Following on from his recent ‘Static Level’ EP Jon Gaiser returns to his home base at Riche Hawtin’s M_nus. The energetic 'Unstable Witness' is a quirky tune utilizing fresh bass tones and an uphill key structure, raising the vibe just slightly above the darkness of the deepest underground. This track has a well crafted and catchy call & response with the melody vs beats before the stuttered vocals dominate quickly placed breakdowns, providing a short but unstable feeling before things kick back into full force.

Next up is Cuban born, Texas raised (relocated to Valencia) Eric Estornel aka Maetrik. Maetrik (aka Eric Estornel) is making incredible leaps and bounds, creating some of the most devastating and unique music right now with his unique blend of techno, house, funk, and electro. Maybe it’s down to his latin roots?

Maetrik’s stunning low-slung rework of John & Nick's 'Satellite' that takes full advantage of the originals range of sounds to create a sci-tech masterpiece that teases the listener, teleporting the pads & patches across into Maetrik's world where the beats & layers re-unite for something special. With a heavy duty groove this has been getting a great reaction out on the floors for John.

Transitions regulars will be very familiar with Lützenkirchen, who has been prolific, but also relentless in the quality of his production work of late. Here Lutz is rewarded for all his hard work and amazing music with a brand new double header on Umek's mighty 1605 imprint. The resulting 'Weekend Freakshow' double header has received great feedback already from DKs worldwide and should be a rocking a room near you soon.

Abiotic Recordings co-founder Dustin Zahn returns hot from last year’s immense ‘Stranger To Stability’ which did the damage on a global scale for Diggers. Here DZ teams up with Joel Mull for another bomb, calling on Pan-Pot to assist with a dark main room number.

We close with Mauro Picotto and a preview from '2010' his anticipated new LP as 'Cold Blood' turns to the dark side with industrial sounds, forceful beats & devastating snare rolls.

    Nick Curly Bio

    http://www.myspace.com/nickcurly8bit

Nick Curly can look back on an enthralling two year spell where his package of killer productions, red-hot record labels and captivating DJ sets have combined to make him one of the most talked about artists to arrive on to the underground scene. This summer, he takes his career to a new level when he launches his DJ residency at Space Ibiza and provides one of the mixes in the latest instalment of the iconic ‘Cocoon Ibiza Summer’ compilation series, alongside Marco Carola.

Producing records since 2005 and, at that time, only a well known name in Germany’s Rhein-Main area, Nick’s early releases on murmur, Supernature, 8 bit and Plastic City laid the groundwork and lit the fuse in the mid 00’s, before subsequent tracks like ‘Pujante’ (Cocoon), and the Cecille releases ‘Stuntman’ and ‘Dubnoise’ saw Nick explode out of the domestic German scene and on to the worldwide stage for the first time.

The big names were not slow to identify his talent and hugely well received remixes soon followed on Get Physical, Liebe*Detail, Mobilee and Saved. As a creator of taste, Nick has taken his Cecille and Cecille Numbers labels, that he run together with Marc Scholl, into the stratosphere since their inception, delivering one dancefloor smash 12” after another and, in the process, helped launch the careers of acts such as Markus Fix, SIS, Robert Dietz and Alex Celler.

More recently, his work together with partner Gorge on his ‘other’ label 8 Bit Records has consistently been hitting the highest heights and Nick now finds himself in the enviable position of having three of the top 20 charted labels on Resident Advisor’s esteemed DJ charts each month.

    Finally ....

10 years have flown by !!!! Tune in next week for an extra special celebration.
