    the horror....the horror

i know the topic of war movies has already been run, but as an avid film critic/producer/director, i have to admidt that this could quite possibly be the most artistic piece of film work to ever hit studios. From the narration to the lighting it is a Grade A piece of work. Can you believe the sillioette shots done in the last 45 minutes? FUCK! this is obviously a piece that will stand the test of time....
    p.s. lance is my boy!

              this movie is simply brilliant.
it was on amc last night. actually redux was. still havent seen the redux in full.
regarding the lighting around kurtz and other stuff in the end is great as you mentioned.
              makes it that much creepier.
this is one of those movies that when i first discovered it, i watched it over and over for literally months.

an absolutely top-notch film that I've seen many times. In my humble opinion, this is the best screen adaption of a book I've ever seen. They managed to keep the essence and emotion of Joseph Conrad's book "Hearts of Darkness" which was set in colonial times in Africa and move the story to 1960s Vietnam.

Also, for a really interesting look at the making of the movie and just how crazy it and the people were, you must see the documentary by the same name as the book "Hearts of Darkness". Some absolutely shocking stuff
"Work like you don't need the money.
Love like you've never been hurt.
                Dance like nobody's watching.
                Sing like nobody's listening.
Live like it's Heaven on Earth."

i had to watch this movie again last night. such a classic.
someone pointed out the lighting in the last 30 minutes of the movie, in some other thread.
and i must say it is quite impressive. it makes Kurtz very intimidating in the end.
francis ford coppola was way ahead of the game when he made this movie.

ironically, when the movie was over i was flipping channels and eventually made my way to the Bravo channel. and to my surprise Martin Sheen was the guest on "Inside The Actors Studio". he was speaking about the opening scenes in the movie where he was locked in the hotel room in Saigon. apparantley, he wasnt acting. he had been so drunk from the previous night and just went to town with the karate and what not. the part where he punches the mirror was not acting he really didnt mean to hit and break the mirror. he cut his hand pretty bad and Francis wanted to stop filming but Martin was working out some inner demons and the film kept rolling.

i had no idea that entire scene was ad-libbed. martin sheen wasnt really acting in that part either, he described himself as a very depressed alcoholic working out his problems on film.

                  massive respect.

Yeah, Coppola almost went insane trying to film that movie.

-Martin Sheen was hospitalized for a heart attack / problems

-The helicopters would fly away to do some real missions against guerillas (these helos belonged to the govt that was hosting their country for the filming - i don't remember what was going down).

-Way over budget, way past deadlines. Francis thought this movie was going to end his career.

-Dennis Hopper was supposed to play a "serious" role, but he was way to strung out and couldn't remember any of his freakin lines...

Regarding Martin Sheen...awesome scene when he's all drunk and does the kung fu...talking about dealing with some issues....

IMO, this is the best war movie. To me, it's not really about "war" but more about a man's journey into the darkness of war. Sheen's narration was spot on....

I've seen this movie soooo many times and never get tired of it.

probably one of the best scenes in any movie happens when when they come across col. kilgore (robert duvall) to find out that he knows lance as a pro surfer. some awesome quotes from that scene...
                      "charlie don't surf!"
"music?" kilgore-"we play wagner, scares the shit out of the slopes"
"just wait 20 more minutes, goddamn napalm is turning the wind against us(or something like that)
                      dude, seriously brilliant!
