    [ K O N T R O L ]

    Love Weekend Edition!

    minimal techno + avant house
    every 1st Saturday at The Endup

    featuring from Cologne, Germany:

    ::: THOMAS BRINKMANN (aka Soul Center) - LIVE :::

    (Max Ernst, Shitkatapult, Curle, NovaMute, Profan)

    Minimalist techno innovator Thomas Brinkmann first caught
    the world's attention in the late '90s with his custom turntable
    induced "Variations" on the works of Studio One and Richie
    Hawtin. In the years since he's been anything but dormant,
    releasing chunky, loopy, dub and funk-inspired techno on his
    own labels Ernst, Max Ernst, and Max, as well as several
    acclaimed LPs under his Soul Center alias on W. v. B.,
    NovaMute, and most recently Shitkatapult. With his new
    album "General Eclectics" just out, Thomas returns to SF
    for the first time in years to deliver a rare live performance
    as creative and unique as the artist himself.

    and from Stockholm, Sweden:

    ::: JOEL MULL :::

    (Drumcode, Truesoul, Cocoon, Liebe*Detail, Audiomatique)

    Techno veteran Joel Mull comes to us from Stockholm, home
    of fellow artists Adam Beyer, Jesper Dalback, and Cari
    Lekebusch who helped define the Swedish techno sound that
    nearly took over the world in the late '90s. Joel's always been
    the gentler one of the group, leaning towards the deep, groovy,
    and melodic side of things without ever sacrificing that
    signature Scandinavian oomph. With his 4th album
    "Sensory" soon to be released on Beyer's Truesoul label, we
    could not be more excited to host him on his North American
    tour and [KONTROL] debut.

    ::: THOMAS BRINKMANN aka Soul Center :::

    Thomas Brinkmann is a highly regarded German producer of experimental minimal techno music. Although experimenting with records since the early eighties, he gained wide reputation with his re-workings of material by fellow artists Mike Ink (Studio One) and Richie Hawtin released in the second half of the 90s. These productions were made by playing physically modified vinyl records on highly customized turntables with an additional tone arm.

    Brinkmann later founded the Ernst record label and introduced his own productions on a series of 12" records taking their titles from female names. He has since expanded his extensive production catalog on his own Max Ernst label, as well as other highly respected outfits such as Traum Shallplaten and Mute Records (under his Soul Center alias).

    His recent releases on Curle recordings, including "Isch" and "Switch it" have been received with great acclaim by techno music fans around the world, and Thomas has just released a new album as Soul Center entitled "General Eclectics" on German label Shitkatapult.

    ::: JOEL MULL :::

    Joel Mull is a rare breed amongst electronic music producers. Classically trained on the piano from a young age, Joelís musical understanding goes beyond the traditional primal dancefloor dynamics often associated with techno. Having been bitten by the techno bug before he left school, his career in music began in 1993, and has been moving upwards ever-since, projecting his soulful slant on the techno blueprint and in the process providing the more musical, emotive ying to the colder, percussive yang of traditional techno. As such Joel occupies a special place within the scene, respected for not just his forward-thinking musical output and long, winding sets of deep and melodic tones but also for being a hard-working professional who has spent his time well, progressively working his way up the techno ladder with a consistent, clearly defined musical style.

    When detailing Joel Mullís production career itís almost easier to name the labels that he is yet to appear on than to list the magnitude of seminal labels that have come calling for his work. Brief highlights include Harthouse (who released Joelís most recent album ëThe Observerí), Superstition, Turbo, Music Man, Cocoon, Drumcode, EC Records, Audiomatique, Liebe*Detail, Jericho and Saved Records. This variety of labels says everything about the versatility of Joelís approach to making music and his ability to balance sounds from across the spectrum with heavy-duty rhythms, chords, and melody.

    A product of the small but highly productive scene that has grown up in Stockholm, it comes as no surprise that Joelís discography is heavy on associations with other key players in the creation of the distinctive Swedish techno sound such as Adam Beyer, Jesper Dahlback and Cari Lekebusch. 2010 will see Joel appear on Dahlback newly launched International Sound Laboratory label, remixing Cari Lekebuschís ëCold Bloodí while there will be follow ups to 2009ís Forming Dies and Passing Through singles on Beyerís Drumcode and Truesoul labels including the release of Joelís third artist album.

    As a DJ, Joel brings the same qualities he has exhibited in his studio work to the live arena. Comfortably combining music from across a range, Joel is a dynamic and interactive DJ who blends rolling basslines, harmonic synths, and energetic percussions to craft an infectious and atmospheric sound. Regularly touching down across Europe, Asia, Australia and North and South America, Joel enjoys a worldwide fan base. Most at home when building the marathon sets that allow him to explore the range of his musical inspiration, the Joel Mull sound has become a key part of the Drumcode events at which Joel enjoys a privileged residency and regularly plays back-to-back with Adam Beyer.
