Transition 321
An excellent show this week focusing on the more melodic side of electronica, with some great productions on Joris Voorn’s Green imprint and Steve Bug’s Poker Flat plus a raid on Kompakt’s back catalogue and excellent remixes from old and new names, miss this one at your peril !
01. Joris Voorn – When It Became Real (Original Mix) [Green Records | GR03]
T321 has an eclectic start, featuring Green Records, a Joris Voorn audio project administered by Edwin Oosterwal with music emotively enriched with a gentle hint of that colour. Green has its own visual identity, graphically conceptualized by Paul Swagerman.
Taking a trip back to 2007 and Joris Voorn’s ‘From a Deep Place’ long player, which upped the ante after his highly acclaimed debut album ‘Future history’. Rich and vivid musical textures are on the menu throughout, as Joris ventures even deeper into exploring many styles, ranging from house, break beat, ambient through to deeply soulful techno. Not being afraid to try out many things Joris delivered a proper album, embracing home listening and dance-floor workouts. ‘From a Deep Place’ is a ride through his vision of electronic music, as tracks are skilfully divided by brief ambient compositions, while the tempo of the music goes from faster house to slower tech house back into some subtle broken beat.
John’s brief and spaced out opener ‘When It Became Real’ typifies Voorn’s melodic, versatile and eclectic approach. Even at 1 min 33 in length ‘When It Became Real’ is simply a beautiful piece of ambient electronica from an Artist reaching the top of his game.
02. Ripperton - The Sandbox (Mark August Remix) [Green Records | GR09.2]
Up next is the second single from Swiss maestro Ripperton’s superb & acclaimed long player ‘Niwa’ one of the highlight releases of 2010, and surely vying for artist album of the year. Two years in the making, ‘Niwa’ and its 14 chapters, represent personal and musical journeys, brought together as this wonderfully complete and exceptional piece of work. Having already been treated to the wonderful revisions of 'Random Violence' (Joris Voorn as featured on T287) and 'Leonor's Lanugo' (Radio Slave) the 2nd single release presents two outstanding revisions c/o French House legend I:Cube ('At Peace') and Berlin based producer Mark August ('The Sandbox'). Diggers have been playing both these stellar tracks. The latter features here as Mark August manages to be contemporary while still remaining vibrant with the floor in mind – the chiming theme is backed by lush orchestral strings and initially minimal yet varied beats that never interfere with the melodies, making this a real listening pleasure.
DJ FEEDBACK….
Michael Mayer - "Sheer beauty from I:Cube & Mark August... count me in!"
Karotte - "I:Cube rmx is great. Love it. The remix from Mark is nice for the late morning hours ☺"
John Digweed - "I:Cube Tape Mix is great."
Deetron - "What a release! Love both remixes a lot but I:Cube is killing it with this remix, great!"
Terry Francis - (Fabric London) - "Mark August Mix is very nice."
Nick Warren - "Bloody amazing mixes, this is what it should be like!!!"
Eva Maria - "It's always difficult to remix something already so beautiful without embarrassing it, but I:Cube & August showed their respect to these Niwa-tracks and I like it, my respect boys!"
Anton Pieete - "Wow!!
Joe - (Hot Chip) - "Mark August mix sounds nice."
Hernan Cattaneo - "Excellent release!!!"
Steve Bug - "The I:Cube mix is da absolut bomb!!! Mark August mix is also really nice!"
03. Jay Tripwire & Katherine Larr - Find Me (Original Mix) [Poker Flat Recordings | PFRLP26]
Steve Bug’s Poker Flat reaches the 8th instalment of their ongoing compilation and mix series ‘Shaping Elements’ with the double pack featuring 10 fine unmixed tracks on CD 1 celebrating the best of their recent catalog (incl. hot new exclusives) plus a bonus CD seeing Jay Tripwire deliver a scintillating mix.
Jay Tripwire is the DJ "responsible for some of the most exciting underground house music to come out of North America in recent years." [DJ Magazine]
Jay’s mix features a couple of exclusive tracks, one of which has been a key feature of Diggers’ recent sets. ‘Find Me’ is a very cool piece of tech house, with a real heads down & focused groove that breaks and re- builds with added layers featuring some intricate sounds & embellishments. This featured in the Bedrock 12 Vortex at the recent sold out 4,500 Brixton O2 birthday celebrations.
04. D'Julz - Get Down [Poker Flat Recordings | PFRLP26]
Staying with ‘Shaping Elements - Poker Flat Recordings Volume 8’ and the accompanying 6 track double vinyl package what features ‘Find Me’ it’s the turn of Parisian Julien Veniel (aka D’Julz).
D'Julz has been at the forefront of electronic music since his career first began back in 1992 (his Bass Culture parties at Rex Club celebrate their 15th Year) and has been on a relentless run of form of late, featuring on some of the worlds’ finest labels [Ovum | 20:20 Vision | Dessous | Poker Flat | Safari | Real Tone | Get Physical |Mobilee | Rekids | Systematic | 100% Pure] producing and remixing essential weapons that are mainstays in record boxes of the world's elite.
In recent times D'Julz has reached a new level of production excellence. 2008's ‘Just so You Know’ on Ovum and 'Fleurette' on Circus Company became instant classics, and his current release for the label 'Rotondo' is well on its way to achieving similar status. His remix of Slam's 'Positive Education' on Soma, and his edit of Anonym's 'Lov Is Easy' on his own Bass Culture label have ruled the DJ and download charts alike.
‘Get Down’ continues this rich vein of form and is another that has been big for Diggers, with its incredibly cool techy sound sounds and cleverly reverberating vocal - a real early evening number and one of those tracks to galvanise the crowd ready for the vortex to be unleashed.
DJ feedback :
Ellen Allien (Bpitch) – “D’julz great” 4/5
Alex Flitsch (Connaisseur) – “Chardronnet and D’julz for me…great deepness!!” 4/5
Anja Schneider (Mobilee) ‘ “Excellent. Like it a lot and will support. So far I like Jay’s and D’Julz a lot” 4/5
Sasse (Moodmusic)- “well thought out package, defo will play the Bug and Chardonney tracks… and the D’Julz tune is ace too, me likey!” 5/5
05. Kruse & Nϋernberg - The Brush (Tom Middleton Liquatech Mix) [Dark Energy Recordings | DE018]
The mood is lightened via some deep deep house.
Separately, Hamburg based Florian Kruse & Nils Nϋrnberg have created some of the most interesting deep house around in the past few years. As solo producers, but more importantly together as Kruse & Nϋernberg they have climbed closer to the tree-top with their unique brand of mouth-watering underground deep house infused with the sharp tech-house elements.
With a brand new studio in Hamburg, a long waiting list for tracks and remixes and with recent brilliant DJ-Sets, these guys have absolutely no reason to slow down.
These guys will be better known to Bedrock aficionados as ‘Wiretappeur’ (the three-piece production collective that also includes Stel) has been responsible for some of the most intricate Bedrock productions this year, with their intricate remix of Dirty Mongrel’s ‘Cream’ for Structures and über-cool originals ‘My Real Name Is’ [Bedstructvin5] + ‘Too Much Space’ [Bed12vin1].
Here the duo call on electronic alchemist Tom Middleton for that added sprinkling of musical magic. Expect more from Tom in forthcoming shows after a chance meeting with Diggers at Heathrow Terminal 5 resulted in an exchange of the bearded one’s up front productions.
06. Good Guy Mikesh & Filburt - Ours [We Love This | WLT04]
The house theme continues with the feel good vibes as Leipzig's Good Guy Mikesh & Filburt continue their adventures into the world of rapturous, emotional electronic music. ‘Ours’ is likely to put a smile on anyone’s face no matter what their mood or weather, as the boys deliver a “laid back nu-groove inspired jam that floats through dubby out disco passages, sweet strings and catchy e-funk boogie riffs. The pair really have a talent for long, building arrangements and this is a prime example. Pour yourself a drink and get ready to shake it ! ”
07. DJ Koze – Mariposa (Kompakt – Total [Kompakt | KOMPAKT 160]
John digs deep into his archive next to dust off one of those special tracks that has formed an integral part of past sets. Hidden amongst the tracks in 2007 label compilation ‘Kompakt - Total 8’ from the Cologne-based imprint is a piece of elegant yet devastating techno symphony from Stefan Kozalla aka DJ Koze, regular contributor to Kompakt Extra’s excellent ‘Speicher’ series.
The dark, tripped out & almost Holdenesque sounds build through quietly intense swathes of noise merging the functional drone of machines with the unexpected intense melodies. ‘Mariposa’ evokes memories of darkened club rooms, state of the art sound system, and being transfixed, suspended in the eye of that infamous Digweed vortex as the dark sound-waves wash over you.
A sublime & devastating piece of intense electronic music.
08. Saul Williams - Banged And Blown Through (Antti Rasi Remix) [Fader Label | Unofficial Bootleg]
We head over to Tampere, Finland via New York and Cleveland, Ohio with a cheeky but very cool bootleg handed to John during his recent Helsinki set. This is also evidence of just how obsessive John is about his music, as he’s renowned for playing through everything that is handed to and sent to him for fear of missing out on a hidden gem.
Poet, writer, actor and musician Saul Williams teams up with co-produce Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) after appearing on NIN's album Year Zero & supported the group on their 2006 North American tour. This collaboration resulted in 2007's The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust! which was available only at the website niggytardust.com until a physical CD & LP version of the album was issued.
A new name to us, Antti Rasi (DJ moniker Paul Easy) undertakes remix duty in an unofficial capacity after finding a remix kit for ‘Banged and Blown Through’ on the NIN website. The parts caught Antti’s interest and imagination and he started playing around with the elements.
The fine techy result really works well here – sometimes there aren’t enough diverse vocal tracks out there, particularly involving diverse artists and crossing genres. Antti hasn’t yet sent the track to Saul Williams or original producer Trent Reznor – so Transitions fans worldwide unite, show your support and give this guy some promotion.

If it’s good enough for Transitions it’s good enough for a wider release!
09. Tiefschwarz feat. Dave Aju - I Can't Resist (Kiki Dub) [Souvenir Music | Souvenir 030]
We end with family duo, Ali and Basti Schwarz and an outstanding new remix EP showcasing materials inspired by the candy world of their last LP ‘Chocolate’.
The first set of Melted Chocolates had heavy support from the likes of Loco Dice, Dubfire, Anja Schneider & Radioslave. Included on the follow up is a remix from Bpitch Control´s Finnish superstar, Kiki (last seen on T312 with the excellent ‘Cinema Obscura’). Here Kiki goes straight for a dubbed out groove, as his jazzy keyboard simmers with classic deep waves and frequency noises for an uplifting end.

Timo Maas: where we at?
It wasn’t so noticeable at first. We had a good decade of his classics still circulating around our iPods, car stereos, record boxes and club sound systems. But gradually a feeling of lacking and unfulfillment began to descend on the dance music world.
Where on earth did Timo Maas go?
Thankfully it was nothing more than a relatively brief hiatus: a sabbatical, the likes of which are often essential to an artist’s creative reinvention and reinvigoration. Sometimes you have to move backwards to move forwards, and it was with this cyclical ethos in mind that the German legend returned in 2008 with the subliminal techno trip of Subtellite – a record on the world’s foremost techno imprint, Cocoon, which boldly stated that he was casting aside the big league commercial identity that he had so successfully – and more importantly credibly – lived under for the best part of the Noughties. The Maasmeister was back with his first club record in 6 years, and it was pretty damn clear that he meant business.
The business in question was more or less that of getting back to his underground roots, but as always combined with his usual forward-thinking, innovative approach. Finding a musical soulmate in Italian production wiz Santos has been one of his key developments in returning to the fore, and the synergy that the duo exude in their joint Mutant Clan productions and the running of their acclaimed Rockets & Ponies label cannot be understated.
“It’s been very important for me” underlines Timo. “After searching for a long while for somebody who understands my musical vision and also has the ability to change the ideas in tracks and songs...to meet him was and is the best. I never had a better possibility to express my ideas than right now with him.”
Alongside their own twisted, boundary-less techno vibes, the label plays host to their favourite rising talents – from Adam Port and Tiefschwarz co-producer Santé’s huge summer anthem Own (chosen by Radio 1 as one of their Ibiza Weekend highlights) to the ever-impressive output of Alex Dolby, they’ve spent over a year carefully selecting the finest producers to work alongside them. It’s electronic music without rules and convention – or if you ask Timo for a description: “be careful...it`s quiet twisted stuff"
But despite his return to underground movements, he’s still keeping the door open to more mainstream endeavours. Quality not quantity is the principle, and to that effect carefully chosen remixes are forthcoming from his studio for the legendary William Orbit, soul sensations Noisettes and Placebo. But it’s all on his own terms: these are no mere money-grabbing, let’s-get-a-cool-name-on-board exercises - more projects Timo feels passionate about and inspired by, and which will receive the honour of being transformed into one of his uniquely-styled journeys. And more tantalisingly still, he’s got a new artist album planned for 2011 – his third so far. Whether it’s an overground or underground affair – or somewhere in between – not even he can say just yet.
Right now, it’s all about laying down the ideas, and letting it run its course organically. “The main target is to write a studio album. One that stands out, that is unique in its sound and is hopefully also timeless. We`ll see. The first ideas sound very promising already.” Listening back to Timo’s earliest breakthrough tracks, they still sound futuristic and unique, and you can bet your bottom Euro that this one will be no different. But if you think someone of his stature and varied experience has done it all, you can thing again. “I`m only 41 - there`s loads more music to write and play” he enthuses. “We got some good long term plans...and we`re continuously working on it!” Amen to that.
An excellent show this week focusing on the more melodic side of electronica, with some great productions on Joris Voorn’s Green imprint and Steve Bug’s Poker Flat plus a raid on Kompakt’s back catalogue and excellent remixes from old and new names, miss this one at your peril !
