U.S. Bans Large Printer Ink, Toner Cartridges on Inbound Flights

The United States has banned the transport of printer ink and toner cartridges weighing more than a pound in the wake of the failed al Qaeda plot that used bombs concealed in modified toner cartridges.

In a predictable move, as part of a United States Homeland Security directive after the discovery of bombs hidden in laser toner cartridges aboard two airplanes in late October, the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) has banned the shipment of large ink and toner cartridges aboard overseas flights bound for the U.S.
A statement today by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on new procedures in the wake of the bombing attempts includes the passage "…Toner and ink cartridges over 16 ounces will be prohibited on passenger aircraft in both carry-on bags and checked bags on domestic and international flights in-bound to the United States…."

This ban won't have an effect on average travelers, few of whom would be transporting heavy toner cartridges, anyway. And it should have a minimal effect on the shipment of ink cartridges, few (if any) of which weigh anywhere near a pound. It will presumably affect the importing of laser printer supplies, however, as many laser toner cartridges weight well in excess of a pound.

The normally innocuous laser toner cartridge took on a nefarious significance for its role in the thwarted bomb plot made public on October 30. Yemen-based terrorists in Yemen had hidden powerful bombs within modified toner cartridges being shipped aboard airplanes. They were addressed to synagogues in Chicago, though the real targets were apparently the airplanes themselves, one a passenger flight and one a UPS cargo flight. After a tipoff and worldwide alert, both packages were found and safely defused. Al Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula has claimed responsibility for sending the bombs.

    Thank god for this.

Yeah i feel so much safer knowing people can't take printer cartridges on planes.

"This ban won't have an effect on average travelers, few of whom would be transporting heavy toner cartridges, anyway" - hmm, well yeah.

Maybe the guy with the exploding pants who walked onto a US bound flight with no passport would have been more closely watched if he'd been carrying a large printer?

Why address the parcels to synagogues if you wanted them to blow up mid-air? Surely any other address than a synagogue would have been a better idea to avoid bringing attention to your "terror plot" (i just dropped the t word there).

The parcel discovered in the plane that landed in the uk was determined safe by bomb disposal teams almost immediately, 4 hours later that was changed and we still had a "terrorist threat" on our hands. Someone in Govt's PR machine obviously knows a bit more about bomb disposal than the bomb disposal guy did eh?

I got into an argument with my father the other day discussing Al Qaeda. How is it that these guys could pull off something so precise, so devastating as 9/11 and now they resort to these petty crimes I asked? He told me it was because they are now "on the run." "The invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan have put Al Qaeda on the run and they can't plan major attacks anymore" he said. Talk about a brainwashed individual. He loves Bush and loves Cheney even more if that is any insight into his thinking.

This printer cartridge was just to create fear before the election.

                          It is so painfully obvious.

I find it funny that when people started to question the validity of the Bin Laden videos, then the messages change to just audio's. Then people start to question the odd behaviour around some of these suicide bomber attempts on aircraft only to have the goal posts moved again with the martyr's reverting to parcel bombing.

Ya that is how you know the whole thing is a sham. I mean to go from military precision to pathetic little parcel bombs is quite low.
