    Quitting or continuing mixing

At the moment I really don't know what to do best . I'm very busy with my new study and I haven't got long weekends or vacations anymore like I had before. I'm still buying tracks I like because I hear all those nice things on youtube or Beatport etc, but I haven't got enough time to do something special with them. Sometimes I have a day off and I try to make a new set, but the problem is that I don't know where to start after +- a month. Most of the time I'm stuck with +- 100 nice and new tracks and at that moment it just sucks to choose. At the end of the day I have the tracks selected I really want to play (+- 15), but that's also the moment that my free day is almost over. At that moment it feels a bit like throwing away 85 tracks and screwing up a free day without results. You can understand that this feeling is very frustrating.

Yesterday was a day like above and something inside me said around 5 o'clock: "you have to quit m8, it costs to much money and you're spoiling your free days with selecting tracks and creating frustrations instead of chilling out, enjoying music and spending all that money on nice gigs or other stuff".

At the other side I'm currently listening to the new Streetrave Sasha set again and I hear those lovely tracks that I also wan't to use in a nice deep mix. I'm also having some visions about playing a mix like that in a nice area with tracks I already have, and when I look at my shiny black SL1210's and the midi-controller the whole mixing-addicted love feeling starts again and I feel the tickling in my fingers .

At the end this feel good/bad feeling starts over and over and I don't know what to do best. I really like mixing and I really like creating nice sets, but I just need more time for it.

Are there more users with experiences like I have at the moment ?

donīt be "attached" to djing... do it when you want to, and if you want to. If at this moment you are into something else, donīt feel sad about not djing. do what you feel, youīll be fine, and maybe later youīll return to dj... or not. In the end, itīs about what you want. thatīs just my thoughts about everything...
    Itīs a spiritual thing!

hell yeah....I got married in 2008.ever since then I haven't had enough time to dedicate myself like I used. to. 1 year later, we bought our first home. So all of 09 and part of this year has been devoted to the house.

Between 2008 and 2010.. I still looked through beatport and other places and purchased tracks here and there. But no time to actually make a set.

The trick for me is when purchasing tracks.. its best to organize them ahead of time by genre's and dates.. (or whatever your method of organzing is). So when you do have time, its much easier to select what you feel like playing.

Its a bit frustrating having all this music and no time to program and record a set. When I do have spare time.. I dont bother with all that shit, I just turn on everything and just start mixing. I have more fun just playing shit out without recording or doing anything like that.

Most of the time, the set comes out really good, so I try and make a mental note of what I played, so next time if I have time to plan something out to record, I have a decent idea what to start off with.

I've been collecting vinyl and mp3s for too long to just quit now. I love this hobby.

Sometimes.. you just have to make time! Say to everything else.. not today.. Im gonna mix mix mix.. fuck the rest today. Let the dogs go hungry, ignore my wife, the lawn, etc...Im going to my room; smoke a bowl and play some choooons!!

just like Micko and Diego mentioned too.. you can't put pressure on yourself thinking.. I need to mix, I need to use my stuff..My priorities when I got married and got the house were that. So I didnt do much for 2 years..but I knew I still had all my equipment in my room and eventually I would return to it when time for that came around... which it did.

Focus on whats important first..we're not 18yrs of age anymore. Once you get all the adult shit out of the way.. then you can play... I sound like my parents. haha

Thnx for all the reply's so fast and thnx for the beautifull words Diegoff

I really think you guys are wright. Today mixing feels indeed sometimes like a "need to do" thing because of all those tracks I keep buying. At the moments I'm mixing from left to right on non-serious nights I'm loving it, but when I have that feeling: "I need to do a new Yacht Sessions" and I have to make it on that day because that's my free day the fun is gone and there's to much pressure. I think I just have to quit recording for now and stop buying too much tracks. I just have to play with the vinyl's or the timecode mode when I really want to, and I have to try to live with the idea that playing with my setup might happen only once a month. Maybe I can start recording things again when I got my life back to "normal". First I just need to start enjoying mixing again and try to say goodbye to that: "I need to mix" feeling.

i feel exactly the same...for the past year or so...my first "serious" work...a serious girlfriend...if i get 2-4 hours a week to myself i count myself lucky...recently I started getting back into mixing...i need to go back to my roots.

It's ok to take some time off. It will make you comeback with an even more positive will to do things .... some times i feel like a bit oversaturated with EDM in general ... I tend to think that I might be missing out a bit of life ... last month I've been doing more outdoorsy stuff , which I had forgotten on how I would enjoy those sort of things.

I talked to a few people about this and they told me it tends to happen , just take a break off and come back ... its good mental hygiene 4u .

i agree with everyone's comments. honestly, it's ultimately your decision. if you would prefer to chill out rather than mix, do it. if it comes to be a financial burden, maybe it is best to take some time off. i'm sure you'll want to come back and play eventually. i have taken about 10 months off because some of my equipment broke. i'll admit, it's nice taking a break even though i really didn't have a choice in the matter.

                          you shall continue!

in my case, i simply do not have the time to mix on my turntables (i skipped the whole cdj phase by the way, lol) and go through with the whole recording process; nevertheless, i can whip up a competent, 80min mix in ableton live's arrangement view in under an hour. arrangement view mixing is tough at first, as a lot of it consists of warping and programming, but once i got the hang of it, it simply became second nature and is super quick to edit levels, EQ's, FX, transitions, etc..

Great advice from Diegoff. Important to remember if you do have a break, there will still be brilliant music being created when you come back

i do the same thing man, buy tracks and never use them n stuff but lately ive been gathering them in the hold like 80+ tracks, then before i buy i filter them to 30 or so and that becomes the cream of the crop. i love making a mix on a nice weekend, the feeling is priceless, its more of a taking a break and disappearing somewhere in your headfones, def a good to have talent,,, choosing and buying the tracks is a fun process too.
man, when i do a 2hr mix i feel like ive been working out
                              Life's pretty fast..blup..blup...We made it!!
