His successful parties and club nightsattracted much support and paved him the way to become one of the truenice guys in Berlin’s clubscene. At first he only organized parties, thenafter a while he started to DJ himself: ‚DJ Phonique‘ was born.Since January ‘98, Phonique continued to bring previously lesser knownDJs and producers to Berlin for his club nights and parties, presentingmany strong nights with DJs like Glen Gunner (Street Corner Symphony/Block 16), Lil Tony (Nu Spirit Helsinki/Guidance), Alexkid (F-Com/Ovum),Llorca (F-Com/Brique Rouge), Joakim (Tigersushi) or Ivan Smagghe(Blackstrobe/Volga Select). In the meantime, Phonique continued to develop his ‚freestyle‘ profile. Hisguests were treated to a splendid mix from Hip-Hop via Breakbeats to OldSchool and Drum‘n’Bass. Just about anything was possible in between,as long as the tracks had the necessary ‚type of groove‘. He invited DJslike LTJ Bukem, Richard Dorfmeister and many more.Traveling the world and playing clubs in Sao Paulo, Helsinki, Paris,London, Marseille, Vienna, Brussels, San Francisco, Prague, Tel Aviv, justto name a few destinations, Phonique never forgot his Berlin base. Justlike his residencies at Tresor and Pfefferbank (among others), where hebrought his ‘Club Paris’ evening to life, with guests like Pepe Bradock, DJDeep, Jori Hulkkonen and I:Cube. From time to time Phonique, together with his partner Kiki, presented their‚QuadroPhoniquekikz’ project on four turntables, eventually releasing theirfirst ‘QuadroPhoniquekikz’ mix-CD in 2002 on Komfort Musik. His first two 12“ were released on Martin Landsky’s Intim Recordings, andfrom then on Phonique released on labels like Komfort Musik (Berlin),Seasons (USA), Brique Rouge (Paris) and Crosstown Rebels (London),but mainly on Steve Bug’s own Poker Flat and Dessous. His first remix (for Doctorolive) was released on French label Bazoline. After remixes for Frankman (Draft/Fm), Soulcamp (Soulcamp), Le Tone(Naive), Funky Transport (Brique Rouge), Tonic Agents (Highgrade),Detroit Grand Pubahs (Poker Flat) and Erlend Oye (!K7) he even remixedGermany’s pop phenomena Rosenstolz‘.Besides Phonique’s remixing talents and DJing with vinyl and CDs, healso started to edit tracks so they made more sense for his DJ-sets.When Jazzanova found out about this, they asked him to do some fortheir own use. So Phonique worked out some edits, partly with his buddyDixon. Edits for Georg Levin and DJ Spinna, remixes for Georg Levin andSirius Mo even got released on Jazzanova’s Sonar Kollektiv label. In 2004, his second 12“ on Dessous ‚The Red Dress‘ climbed on topof the official German Club Charts (DCC), it became one of the hottesttracks being played by almost every key DJ in Europe. Besides producingfour tracks with Louie Austen, he also worked on Erlend Oye’s incrediblysuccessful DJ-Kicks (!K7) project, mixing tracks, adding technical supportand consultation and actually played several tour dates with Erlend allacross the world. In Autumn 2004 then his debut album ‚Identification‘ was released onDessous, featuring collaborations with Paris The Black Fu, Erlend Oye,Alexander East (Minneapolis), Ian Whitelaw (Glasgow) and Dixon (SonarKollektiv). With amazing international feedback, and even a numberone chart entry on Itunes’ dance download charts, it turned out to bePhonique’s breakthrough success so far.Massive video play on German MTV’s renowned ‚Spin‘ and on Viva Plusof ‚For The Time Being‘ with Erlend Oye took his popularity to anotherlevel. The 12“ release ‚99 & A Half‘ feat. Alexander East featured one ofthe best I:Cube remixes of the period and became a club hit immediately. The album track ‚You, That I‘m With‘ feat. Ian Whitelaw was licensedto South Africa even pre-release, where Ian Whitelaw’s last track (withAlexkid) had also been the club hit of 2003/4.Also the single ‚For The Time Being‘ with remixes by Alexkid andMotorcity Soul received massive positive feedback, followed by a remixby Sasse (Moodmusic), leading to a future collaboration with Rodney Hunter (G-Stone) as they found that their combined creativity would gobeyond the framework of a remix and demanded proper recognition, leadingto a great track for the next album.Even for Sven Väth ‚Identification‘ was a highlight, thus he askedPhonique for an exclusive track for ‚Cocoon Compilation E‘.With the closing of Tresor in 2005 Phonique lost one of his favorite residencies, playing the Bonito House Club once a month. Since his very firstTresor Wednesday night gig of February ‘99, he fired up the 600-1400people crowd that would not stop dancing up until late Thursday morning....Since Berlin’s nightlife is subject to rapid change, Phonique’s residenceschange alike. He mostly played at Weekend, F.U.N. Crew’s incrediblevenue with a view over all of downtown Berlin at Alexanderplatz. Theirsecond compilation on Fine/ Four Music was supported by Phonique’strack ‚Bee‘. The track got massive support by colleagues like TrevorJackson (Output) and M.A.N.D.Y. (Get Physical).Recently Phonique asserted his recognition as one of the high profileremixing artists in the dance world, letting Morcheeba’s former vocalistbenefit from his talents on a remix of her solo project ‚Skye‘ (Atlantic/Warner).Phonique mostly works with Alex Krüger (Dub Taylor / Korsakow /Tigerskin) for his productions/remixes, but from time to time he is co-operatingwith other artists or musicians like Steve Bug, David Duriez & PhilWeeks, Martin Landsky or Meitz.2006 was also a quite successful year as Phonique came up to someexquisite releases on very well respected labels from the like of FourMusic‘s Fine., Moodmusic, Simple Records and Tiefschwarz‘s young andfresh Souvenir, next to his homebase Dessous Recordings. In January 2007, Phonique launched ‚Ladies & Gentlemen‘ his own, newand special label for well selected discoid, but still underground-edgeHouse, with pop-appeal and a special touch of ‚je-ne-sais-quoi‘. Onthe new label he will present his best discoveries from various destinations.Besides labelwork, playing a busy tour schedule from Tokyo toSt.Petersburg and everywhere in between, Phonique released ‚GoodIdea‘, the follow up longplayer to groundbreaking ‚Identification‘ in May2007. Already being recognized internationally as one of the leadingforces behind deep and forward thinking club music and commercial productionsalike, this one took it to the next level. The following year 2008 brought some more fame into Phonique‘s life. Hehas won two awards at one go. Firstly it has been the annual ‚BeatportAward - Best Deep House Artist 2008‘ and secondly the „Ibiza DJ Award -Best Deep House DJ 2008“. On the release side he put out the anthemic‚Kiloo & Phonique - The Passion‘ on his Ladies & Gentlemen imprint. In 2009 ‚The Pump E.P.‘ on Dessous hit the scene and stirred up atremendous buzz around the electronic dance music circus. Aways asurprising talent, this was the start to another fresh and exciting year!Later in ‚09 he released the ‚Time For House‘ compilation and mix onLadies & Gentlemen, which included tracks from faithful House heads likeVincenzo, Tigerskin amongst many others. Now in 2010 we are greeted by Phonique‘s third full-length album -‚Kissing Strangers‘, on home label Dessous. Its a super detailed, lovinglyproduced ode-to-house in all its wonderful forms, from deep, minimal tojazz and latin inspirations. Across 15 tracks (each co-produced with longtimecolleague Alex Kruger a.k.a Tigerskin, and also a heavyweight list ofrespected producers like Gui Boratto, H.O.S.H, Kiloo, Kikiorix, Abyss andPupkulies) we encounter all that is rich, pure and beautiful about modernelectronic music. From catchy, underground-pop moments, to strong clubreadycuts, its a long player in the true sense of the phrase. The first singleto be lifted from the Album, entitled ‚Our Time Our Chance‘ feat. IanWhitelaw, is presented along with amazing remixes by Andre Lodemannand Wahoo.
