    [ms] Label Database?

Do you guys think it would be possible to add a label database too? I just started my own label last month and looking to spread the word. I'm sure it would be a great resource for [ms]'ers to learn about new labels that they haven't heard of before.

    Re: [ms] Label Database?

I'm going to be candid here, so I hope I don't come off as blunt or rude since it's not my intent. My original plan was to eventually add labels and be able to tag our DB artists to labels. As much as I'd love to repeat that process for the labels I first need to see more people populating our current DJ Database. I hate to say it, but there's no way I'm going to create a second database when our current DJ DB is only being populated by about four people. I need to be confident that most members out there will take the five minutes to submit a new artist to the DB if they create a thread for an artist that doesn't exist... it's just not happening.

If I had ~20 committed volunteers who were devoting at least one hour per day submitting DJs for four months, I'd start working on the label DB. Otherwise, I'm not going to spend another ~3-4 hours/day for four months to create a second database that will ultimately be my responsibility to populate and maintain along with the first one.

Really? But the DJ Database looks pretty busy and well-populated in a relatively short period of time. I think you should only have to focus on adding labels that are related to [ms] style of music. No need to add Armada and its 7,000 sublabels. Given how many labels are already posting in the Releases subforum, I don't think it would be long before label owners catch on and start tagging and adding themselves. The extra promotion would be a really great service to the music industry, with sales being as low as they currently are.

The success of our DJ DB is because of a very small number of contributors. To be honest, without bando/huggie/ribbario/gatz/trick, we wouldn't have a DJDB... this wouldn't have been a success without their hard work in contributing 92% of our artists, yet I feel like at least 50% of the new threads in P&R have no corresponding artist in the DJDB to get tagged against . We still have a long way to go before we'll see every artist as taggable for a new thread.

How about this... if we can hit 2,000 artists in the DJDB (without sbando doing it himself ), I'll write a Label DB. If I can get just 30 people to submit 25 artists to the DJDB to hit the 2000 goal, then I'll dedicate another few months of my time into creating the Label DB. I wrote almost 2,000 lines of code and spent about four months of my time doing development/testing for our current DJDB. I just can't commit to it unless I see a commitment from the community to help our current DJDB project grow

I added Mike Huckaby, it was uniquely gratifying. I should add my buddy Pete.

Great work to everyone who made big contributions as well as the Mods who keep this place going. It's gotten to be a pretty robust edm website over the past year.

            Thank you.

It was fun while it lasted...

Sounds like you're in need of a vacation OK sounds good, but are there really 2,000 artists worth mentioning? You should let the artists worry about adding themselves. They should be maintaining it like a Myspace profile

There's absolutely 2000 artists worth mentioning Here's a fun exercise... if you go to thedjlist.com and look at the top 50 DJs by member rank, you'll see a bunch of names that don't exist in our DB yet. Robert Vadney, Peer Van Mladen, Daniel Wilson, Roger Shah, Eric Tyrell, Jamlimmat, Sebastian Ingrosso, Michael Burian, Masoud, Praveen Nair, etc. I just named 20% of their top 50 that don't exist in our DB... and their list has over 30k artists!

I can think of a few just off the top of my head that don't exist in our DB yet... Rhadoo, Pedro, Adam Jay, Par Grindvik, Robag Whurme, Gibby Miller, Jeremy P Caulfield, etc. 75% of the people who are featured on RA podcasts/Ibiza Voice/CLR/other "big" podcasts don't exist, either. I guess the whole reason the DJDB was created was to help us learn about those that we don't know, so we shouldn't stop at 1k.

The last 3 kiss100 guest mix DJs weren't on the DB

                    They are now of course

There are BIG NAMES still missing, for chrissake. And not has-beens or trance djs (1p a dozen). But highly-regarded, cream of the crop names, Pickz mentioned a few, Robag is the most obvious (even if he's filed under Wighnomy Brothers). When you get to 2.000, you'll start to get a proper snapshot of the scene, but only as a base to work on by adding lesser known dubstep/d 'n' b/techno djs/producers.

As for my entries, I've tried to keep them consistent and I've been very picky about bios and pix, that's why there are some big names missing.

As petty as it may sound, perhaps posting a user list and their contributions by numbers would entice people to add. *shrugs*

The way i saw it, i didn't think it was any kind of race or that the database would benefit from being populated as quickly as possible.
My contributions were people who were big influences on me in some way that's all

Good work Pickle, it's great what you've done i think. But relax a little now as the database works very well. I see why you wanted people to get stuck in as you've put so much time and effort in and i guess you'd be a bit pissed off if you thought no-one cared, but they do.

It doesn't HAVE to be 2000 by the end of the month or whatever numbers does it? Why does that matter?

Big up Sbando, Huggie etc all the same though
