    Dead PS3 - YLOD

So my PlayStation quit working after three years of heavy use. When I turn it on, it lasts for ~30 seconds before beeping 3 times, turning itself off, and flashing a red light until I physically power it off.

    Do not like!

After a bit of research, it seems it's a situation called the Yellow Light of Death. Apparently it's common for the system to overheat and shut itself off for protection, and supposedly it's usually because the CPU and GPU solder connections went bad.

There's a set of videos on YouTube explaining that it can be fixed by applying 700 degrees of heat with a heat gun to it for a few minutes. It's that or send it to Sony for repair for $150. With Christmas specials out there, I figure I'll just buy a new one if this doesn't work. I spent two hours tonight taking my PS3 apart and cleaning it... it was fn dirty.

Anybody else ever had this happen? I'm a bit skeptical that heating it will fix it, but it's worth a shot.

Sorry to hear that has happened mate; I am now worried that this could happen to me. It happened with my X-Box 360 and I was luckily in warranty so got it repaired.

Why can't they just design these things to last!

I freakin love my PS3 so I bloody hope it lasts.

damn with all that dust i would just suspect it overheated due to bad airflow and a part went out.

You werent kidding about the dust. You could plant crops in that stuff!!! No wonder it overheated. Heat is the destroyer of electronics!

I might disassemble mine just to clean out the dust!

At least you got it working again! Black Ops just isnt the same with out pickle on there terrorizing everyone!

same thing happened to my PS3 about a month ago before i went away for work .. did some research and asking around and found that practically all my friends had the same problem with their PS3s before they went dead and some of them actually managed to repair it but it didn't stay fixed for long before they decide to get a new one but they were all surprised that i had my PS3 longer than theirs and it lasted longer as well even with me being a more heavy user than all of them ...

but after weighing out the costs of sending my PS3 for repairs i've decided to get a new one
I broke my spoon on the viagra sundae.
