So my PlayStation quit working after three years of heavy use. When I turn it on, it lasts for ~30 seconds before beeping 3 times, turning itself off, and flashing a red light until I physically power it off.
Do not like!
After a bit of research, it seems it's a situation called the Yellow Light of Death. Apparently it's common for the system to overheat and shut itself off for protection, and supposedly it's usually because the CPU and GPU solder connections went bad.
There's a set of videos on YouTube explaining that it can be fixed by applying 700 degrees of heat with a heat gun to it for a few minutes. It's that or send it to Sony for repair for $150. With Christmas specials out there, I figure I'll just buy a new one if this doesn't work. I spent two hours tonight taking my PS3 apart and cleaning it... it was fn dirty.
Anybody else ever had this happen? I'm a bit skeptical that heating it will fix it, but it's worth a shot.
