i was supposed to be heating it to about 6-700 degrees C. The thermocouple said that it was 575 degrees, but the thing can't melt till about 1000, hence it was wrong.
You have to clean the crystals by firing Argon atoms at the surface which knocks off any impurity atoms such as sulpher or carbon. Then you heat the sample and any damage you have caused gets repaired. In theory anyway

maybe this thread wasn't such a good idea.....
Anyway, I emailed the technician back at Warwick to ask if he could sort me out with another crystal. He replied with 2 words "FUCK OFF".
I feel on top of the world today I tell you

haha! i'm sorry man, that sucks. i wish you the best in your thesis though.

what i don't get, is how is it your fault? it doesn't sound like the temperature guage was calibrated correctly if it said 575 degrees and silver isn't supposed to melt until higher temps. so how is that your fault unless you own the guage?

to be honest, it should be obvious when a piece of metal is gonna melt. The thing starts to glow red, then orange, then yellow when things get critical. I was looking at it thinking the thermocouple must be wrong but i didn't realise how wrong it was and it melted in front of my eyes. It is my fault, without a doubt.
However, my supervisor was alright about it really, he said he appreciated the confession and to be more careful in future. Thats quite nice compared to "FUCK OFF" imo.

as long as your honest with profs about shit like that, they tend to be pretty calm. its not like its a corporation's money you just wasted; post secondary institutions are models of inefficient and frivilous spending.
