Definetely a classic. Frank Herbert is a good author.

they used a great quote from Dune, where the lead character is explaining how to use sound to break bones and crush vital organs, in a popular breaks track last yaar.

Read the first two books and felt letdown after Dune Messiah, but the first was awesome. Are the later books better than the second?

As for the movie, I felt that the sci-fi series was a much better version of the books. That old movie was pure crap...from overacting to horrible-looking effects.

The original movie was made by David Lynch, a great director for the job, although he doesn't stick too closely to the original story. Also the sci-fi remake is worth watching, if you are that big of a fan of the books.

I agree, the series deff peaked between Childen of Dune and God Emperor of Dune. When Leto II took on "The Skin Which Was Not His Own".

Just finished Chapterhouse: Dune last night. Really great book, but it left me hanging. And yeah, I have heard of the next Dune book coming out. I guess his son has notes that Frank Herbert wrote for the seventh book before he died.

Dune (speaking of the novels) is my favorite sci-fi series, period. I own all 12 books (and all 3 movies.) The originals are beyond comparison. And as much as I hate to sound like those people who bitch about how books are better than movies, I can just about squeeze what the movies left out in the Grand fucking Canyon!

As far as the prequels, the House trilogy was alright, but I really enjoyed the Jihad trilogy. Brian and Kevin J. need to hurry the hell up with the last 2 books!

God Emperor is definately the best of the series. Leto II is the best character ever
What his son did to the series is unforgivable. He should have left it to die in peace like his father. Lynch's movie sucked but it wasn't really his fault. They had endless quarells during the shooting and in the end lynch demanded for his name not to be put on the credits. The series is way way cooller and i really think they nailed the feeling of the books.

The Dune series is brilliant. The older ones (by Frank Herbert) are far better written, but the newer ones (prequels etc) are also decent.

The prequels are pretty cool because they show you where all the things in the later books come from (Fremen, Bene Gesserit, etc).

God Emporer was quite strange IMO, difficult to get your head round.
