Re: Any tips to get rid of the noise coming through my monitors ?

Alright, so I got some time to take everything apart. I disconnected everything from the patch bay. I then ran ONLY my interface output and monitor input do the patch bay.... buzz ! Not quite as bad as before, but still pretty bad.

So then I flick the switch on the patch bay to turn the connections in question from normalled to open, and the buzz disappears. All that means is that when I cut the interface output to the monitors, the buzz goes away. Once again, these are the only things touching the patch bay at all, and it's mounted on a wood shelf.

    And then...

I decide I'm just going to plug the interface output (unbalanced) directly into the monitor input (balanced) using UN-balanced cables.... and I'm still getting some buzzing. So I change to balanced cables, with the exact same connection and the buzz goes away....

This leads me to believe that the source of my noise is coming from the computer itself and through the interface outputs....

I still have not been able to power the computer from a different circuit in the house... I need to go buy an extension cable... maybe tomorrow.

computers add noise sometimes. If you can, try to test the interface-monitors system, but using a Notebook with its battery power source (not plugged to the wall). let us know how everything goes after all your tests. thanks and good luck!

Yeah I'll give that a try next week when I get a new cable to charge up my old powerbook.

For now, I've gone back to my previous setup. I run all the outputs of my outboard gear into the patch bay and then run the patch bay into the interface's input. This takes care of most of the stuff I needed the patch bay for... which is getting external sounds into my DAW for recording and editing.

What I've had to give up is being able to easily patch the computer output to any outboard gear, or patch a different source(DJ mixer for example) directly into my monitors.

I suppose this will have to suffice until I can figure out how to fix all this.
