Re: 14/02 MUAK London Pres. Secret Freerange Warehouse Party

Q > You have played in numerous cities now, which has been the best and where would you still like to play?

I really enjoyed Tokyo, I've played there a few times now. And it's interesting going to cities you would probably never visit as a tourist, like Tblisi in Georgia or Tel Aviv. I'm always up for going back to Tokyo because the crowds are quite open to different styles.

Q > What is the biggest crowd you have ever played to?

Probably when myself and Jimpster played at Sonar By Night a couple of years ago, I did a live set from the album, there was probably 5 or 6000 outside at that stage. It was quite nerve wracking I'll admit.

Q > The album on Freerange rightly went massive, how long did it take you to make and do you have designs for a follow up?

It took about 10 months i think - definitely hoping to follow it up, trying to hoover up inspiration for it now! There's so much amazing music just now and I'm loving the whole resurgence in vinyl too.

Q > Did you get much time off in the last year?

Not really, during the week I work in the studio and then weekends it's gigs, but it's really good fun so you can't really call it work per se.

Q > Will you be attending Miami this year and what is your opinion on it?

Probably not, I went there in March 2001 if you can believe it. I wasn't old enough to buy alcohol and I lost my passport. I think i was 18 or something stupid like that. I gave a taxi driver $100 and he ferried me about to the UK consulate and other various places to sort it out. He was quite a cool guy and used to work for Pan-Am in NYC.

I don't really have an opinion on it these days, I always go to Sonar every year as it's a bit closer. Last year somebody stole all my CDs but nobody cared on resident advisor because I'm not Soul Clap.

Q > What first drew your attention to house music?

I used to go out to clubs in Edinburgh and listen to guys like Gareth Somerville play, I was instantly hooked on all styles of 4/4. Edinburgh had a pretty good scene in the early 2000s if I recall. I've been addicted ever since. I love house music, I love listening to other DJs and I love listening to other people's ideas and production. We are all pretty lucky we can live in a society where such a niche underground music can actually survive intact. For it to have survived so long is a miracle, it could have easily have gone the way of skiffle music.

Q > What was the first vinyl you ever bought?

DJ SS - Breakbeat pressure part 1. I was really into the rave sound, then I remember buying La Funk Mob 'Casse Les Frontieres' with the Carl Craig mix. My cousin gave me a big load of vinyl and there was quite a lot of techno and the deeper French stuff like Deepside. I suppose that was the 'golden period' mid 90s which probably explains why everyone is trying to make records that sound like that currently.

Q > Do you still have the MPC2000 from all those years ago?

Not the original 2000, I've had the XL and the 4000, I still prefer the 2000 to those other models.

Q > Why did you lay Bionic Boy to rest?

He fell in with the wrong crowd man! Last i heard he was in the Arizona desert discovering himself again.

Q > Where in the house is your DJmag award from 2010?

It's not a DJ mag one, it's called DJ Awards, they have the awards ceremony at Pacha and it's unique in that everyone who has won an award actually attends the ceremony. But then that's probably because the organisers buy your flights and put you in 5 star accommodation!

I felt pretty chuffed up there with Luciano and Sven Vath et al, they probably had no idea who I was. Although I did get to meet the S Man which was pretty cool. He was a nice guy, if I had been more drunk I would have pleaded with him to make records like he used to.

The award itself is a big ugly green thing and I nearly had it confiscated at Stansted security as they thought it was a weapon. I'm not sure terrorists really use kryptonite inspired DJ awards to incapacitate cabin crew. I'll be honest I actually don't know where it is, but I lose absolutely everything all the time.

Q > How have you found running your own label Dark Evergy?

Pretty easy really, Shur-i-kan does all the difficult accounting and online programming bits!

Q > What releases are lined up on there?

There's a great EP by M A N I K which is coming out in a couple of weeks and myself and Shur-i-kan also do a remix on there too.

Q > Will you be doing any Dark Energy label parties?

Yeah possibly, it's quite hard organising good parties though isn't it, I leave that to the professionals such as yourselves!

Q > Which new artists are you regularly impressed with?

James Blake - I loved that Bakey USTL EP on Unthank - Vakula is smashing it and I love what Andy Ash is doing at the moment as well & obviously M A N I K who we signed to the label.
