The influence of modern techno on a new generation of artists is explored in this week’s podcast, as experimental new producer Tommy Four Seven weaves together some of the sounds that helped shape his own escalating musical identity, with a mix entitled ‘Looking Back… Records that Made an Impact’.
After holding residencies and doing the rounds in the London club scene at a young age, Tommy moved to Berlin to pursue his deep, tough techno sound. He remains in the city, and the influence of both the ‘Berlin sound’ and a wider German techno paradigm can clearly be heard in his own darkly creative productions.
Beginning with a track produced and remixed by two of modern techno’s most esteemed names – Ellen Allien and Marcel Dettmann – Tommy’s mix works it way skilfully through the scene’s most innovative producers, including Jonas Kopp, Oni Ayhun (a side project of Olof Dreijer – one half of The Knife), a couple of names from Berghain’s Ostgut Ton roster (Shed and the aptly named Planetary Assault System), and a Surgeon remix of dubstep heavyweight Scuba.
Much like the sound of his upcoming debut record, Tommy’s mix is dark and brooding but also expertly blended together and immensely listenable in its scope. A fascinating techno retrospective from one of the most promising new producers on the scene.
‘Primate’, Tommy Four Seven’s debut album, is released on 28 March, on CLR Records.
