Deepfunk blasts forward with a quintuplet of tracks from DJ/producer Camouflage, a tried and true lover of all things house music. Camouflage, also known as KJ, fell head over heels for house music as a teenager in Johannesburg, eventually learning DJ skills and putting them to the test in local nightclubs alongside international heavyweights. A 2003 move to London only intensified Camouflage's allegiance to funky four-on-the-floor beats allowing him the chance to play clubs throughout Europe and move into production. Camouflage's intense desire to spread the house music gospel inspired him to found Chicago House FM, an Internet station based on promoting the genre's positive sound and message. KJ's life is undeniably wrapped up in the music.
Releases on Funkfield, Greenhouse, and Flexual and remixes for the likes of Kinky Movement, Fabio Bacchini, and Joey Youngman have led to Camouflage's The Groovelab EP on Los Angeles imprint Deepfunk. Five bass heavy jackin' tracks are found within, tailored strictly for the DJs and their house-hungry dancefloors. Swingy rhythms, solid baselines, 80's funk inspired synths, and catchy vocal samples are found in ample doses throughout this superb package. There's "Ramjack" which breaks the beat flow for a crowd pleasing reggae moment; "Stepped Up" with its stuttering vocal drops and syncopated baseline; the cool "Shake" filled with funky guitar and hooks galore; "Want You Back" with its female diva refrain and some deep house Rhodes work; and, finally, the after hours fueled Reality Mix of "Want You Back," named after Reality, the Johannesburg club where Camouflage honed his DJ chops.
It will be difficult for many DJs to choose a favorite among the five cuts that make up The Groovelab EP. Camouflage and Deepfunkhave loaded this one up with definite heaters, ready to be unleashed on dancefloors worldwide. Deepfunk brings the fuss once again!
DJ Mes (Guesthouse, US) - "Camouflage teams up with one of my favorite labels, Deep Funk!?! Solid as a rock! No frills, no fuss just good music. Buy this!"
Phil Weeks (Robsoul, France) - "The Reality Mix is the one for me. I will play it!"
Joshua Heath (Golden State, US) - "Camouflage has definitely been getting stronger and stronger as he goes on. There are some solid jams on here for sure."
Inland Knights (Drop Music, UK) - "The Reality Mix is pretty cool. I will spin this tonight for sure."
Hippie Torrales (Tombah, US) - "Great old school feel on these tunes. 'Shake' has lots of potential."
Joey Silvero (Distant People, UK) - "Tough jacking business! 'Shake' is a stand out track … the bass line is real naughty!"
Sonny Fodera (Salted / Guesthouse, US) - "A solid EP. I'm really digging 'Ramjock'!"
Michael Fossati (Spirit Of House webzine) - "Uplifting funky tunes with 'Shake' being my favorite for its warm luscious melodies and old-skool funky flavas."
CheckPoint Charlie (MyCuppaT blog) - "Oh yeah! Jackin' funky house and reggae in one … 'Ramjock' is awesome. Huge dance floor favorite guaranteed!"
