Live here in Maryland, been Stateside for 14 years (and counting).

I grew up in a really rough area in London, and have experienced racism since I was about 10. After all this the one thing I’ve learnt is racism is fear. The general human reaction to fear is to go against it. Let it pass. Or tell her to:

Indeed it's alive and well, I'm not fond of the LAPD myself. I get racially profiled often.

I got called out when I flew overseas the last time around to take that chemical test where they dab your hands with a tissue in order to detect traces of any (explosive) chemicals that may have deposited on my palms. Of course I had been in the security queue for 20 minutes and he hadn't picked on anyone. So as he's dabbing my hands, I smiled, he said what's funny, I said "that you decided to pick on the only brown guy in the queue". He just stared at me like you wouldn't believe it, and then to "seem" to wanna make it right, dabbed the next person in line as well. She was a woman with a 3 year old. Oh the intelligence.

most people arent that intelligent to think for themselves. the see the news, read the papers, listen to what people tell them and behave like they think they should.

the states is probably the worst for it aswell. common sense in the common america is very low.

It DOES surprise me (in this area). I've been here for 9 years and this is only the second time it's happened (first time around the guy pulled a knife on me).

Gotta love it in all its glory. Got called Habib while drinking in a bar tonight and was threatened to get kicked out when I retaliated. There's some parts of the Yooonited states of America I love being a part of.

Some of the highlights of the evening

Then the bartender goes, "Sir please mind your language", and I said "or what, you gonna call the cops?" I said "call the cops and I'll call your boss (I know him very well cause he did all the work in my house - and she just kept quiet".

I'm just sad to be a part of this America in fucking 2011......

I would say that is slightly different. American is not a race...you do participate in your society...and people don't like it...i mean your society...not saying that it is correct...but this is prejudice or even anger not racism.

Ya, somehow people see this type of thing as only exclusive to the US, a country of 300,000,000. Every other country's shit doesn't stink. Certainly there can't be any other racism outside the US.

Sorry to hear Kamal and Yeah, Ignorance is global. I dunno what's worse, that woman calling you Habib or the bartender thinking it's ok to let her call you Habib but your can't defend yourself. This pseudo-racism attittude has increased with the decay of our economic and social systems as far as I can tell from my experiences. More people without work, more earning less or generally unsatisfied with their lives and boom there is envy, suspicion and refusal. Foreigners (whatever that's supposed to mean) are reduced to stereotypes too often these days because of a most of the time irrational Angst.
