Dig Deeper presents: Phase One Album Launch
Saturday 2nd April 2011 @ Liverpool Cathedral
This spring something very special is happening within Liverpool. A city that has always been at the avant-garde of music and popular culture, be it with the Beatles, Merseybeat, Cream’s monolithic clubbing brand or some of the most exciting chapters of the post punk movement in the early eighties, showcases an event that marries two previously disparate communities.
The widely renowned record label Dig Deeper, internationally acclaimed DJs Hernan Cattaneo and Danny Howells, and Liverpool clubnight Freeze will be representing dance music. Working hand in hand with them will be a centuries old institution, the coalition providing a stunning soiree in one of Liverpool’s most iconic and grandiose buildings. A behemoth of the city’s skyline that took 74 years to build, it is one of the most breath-taking feats of architecture in the whole of Britain and a figurehead for one of England’s most historically relevant establishments.
Electronic music is coming to the Liverpool Cathedral.
Statistically the building is beyond impressive. It was the architectural dream ticket of its time (a competition described as the chance to define ‘the twentieth century cathedral’), with over a hundred architects competing for a career defining moment. It has since survived two world wars (the second involving a highly aggressive bombing campaign on Liverpool), and is the biggest Cathedral in the UK, the third largest in Europe and the fifth in the world.
More poignantly it is the key element of the city's skyline, a beautiful and imposing figure and the cultural centrepiece of one of the most romantic cities on the planet. When Liverpool opened its tenure as the European Capital of Culture in 2008, it was the overwhelming and obvious choice to host the opening ceremony.
This event will be in the Cathedral’s Well, where architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s stated desire to blend the awesome and the intimate is at its most successful. Here you are flanked by the world’s highest and widest gothic arches, sumptuous stained glass windows and a stunning view of the Cathedral’s main space. Dance music simply doesn't happen in anywhere as magnificent as this.
Two international doyens of dance music will be the main focus for the musical tutelage of the evening. Hernan Cattaneo headlines, the Argentinean wunderkind touching down for one of the most awe-inspiring settings of his near thirty year career. Blending mesmerising melody and gritty grooves has become Hernan’s signature, becoming the premier South American DJ and a global superstar to boot.
He’s joined by Danny Howells, his first return to the city after a scintillating six hour set for Freeze in September. The event provides the platform for the global launch of his Dig Deeper mix album and will be his last UK date in four months. Danny’s commitment to the venue and its wider role within society has is demonstrated by Dig Deeper, Freeze and international music and technology college SAE combining for a community project to give something back to those in immediate cultural resonance to the Cathedral.
This initiative will be a series of workshops that provide a gateway service into the music industry, focusing on Djing, Music production and jobs within the music industry for a variety of social groups, including the unemployed and school children from the surrounding areas. A Spirit Zone area will also be part of the event, providing a relaxed atmosphere for guests to engage with their own spirituality alongside the intended purpose of the Cathedral, that of providing sacred space in a busy world.
The music will be powered by Funktion One, top level company officials personally coming up to engineer the event as a demonstration of their company’s superior acoustic capabilities. The Cathedral boasts a stunning capability for sound and this event will showcase its vicarious potential with jaw-dropping intensity.
