iPod Question

I've been encountering a problem when I upload music to my iPod via iTunes. If it's a set that has multiple parts (eg: Steve Bug - Live at Harpune, Dusseldorf (08-18-2004) Part 1, ...Part 2, ...Part 3, ...Part 4, etc) it doesn't load up properly and none of the files can be played in the iPod. When viewing the contents of my iPod in iTunes, the set contains the proper info (size, length, etc). This also happens with Digweed's Kiss sets (John Digweed - Kiss 100FM (01-16-2005), ...(01-23-2005), ...etc). It seems as though it has a problem with multiple long file names under the same 'Artist' name. Just curious as to whether anyone else has been having the same issue as we all tend to upload similar things (sets with long names). It's very tough to verbalize, but I hope I've made my problem as clear as possible.

For those that may wonder, I am using the most up-to-date version of iTunes (but it's been doing this with all previous versions). If you press play on one of the file names in question it tries to load for a half-second and then proceeds to the next file in the artist list. I can however reconnect my iPod, remove the file from it, and re-up the file and then it will work fine. It's just a pain in the ass.

i haven't had any problems with mine, but i do usually take out any spaces in the filename and try to shorten it as much as possible, for example: Kiss100(Jan092005)JohnDigweed.mp3

I have the 4th generation 20 gb model

That's ok, I'm perfectly happy with my iPod - I wouldn't trade it for the world. This is a software related issue that should be pretty easy to solve. I was just curious as to whether anyone else has run into a similar situation.

I also shorten the file name usually by the date itself for example for the Jan 23rd set I'll just rename 1/23/05. I haven't had any problems so far when playing back on my ipod.

I don't shorten the file name much, but I have the 1st gen 5 GB iPod. So it could be a size thing.

I have a Mini and I always update the ID3 in order to be able to browse by artist. I guess I can just shorten the ID3 and include everything in the Title line beginning with the artist name. I just did it again right now but had to load a 6 part Steve Bug set 1 part at a time and it works fine. I'll give the shortened file name a try next time.

I got the 4th gen 40 gigger and I went through 17 gigs of music straightening out the ID3 tags in iTunes and I didnt have any probs

Is that not the biggest pain in the ass? It's like 1/2 my day is spent sorting out ID3 tags. Why in the hell does it take so long? I have a prog that I can set the parameters to do it automatically, but in order to get it the way I want I'd have to adjust every file name. Seems like I just can't win!

I second dvs's suggestion, in particular I'd avoid any special characters in the file names, especially peroids and commas

Yeah, I definitely avoid any use of special characters. The only exceptions are hyphens and parentheses.
